Help with old Shimano MTB shifter...
Hello Bikeforums!
This is my first foray into geared bikes and I'd like some advice please.
I got an old MTB out of my storage: a 1989 or 1990 GT Al Terra Outpost with a Shimano Country Exage drivetrain. I was riding it down the block when it started up shifting to the smallest cog by itself. Upon inspection of the lever the top nut came loose so I figured I'd grease everything up and reinstall. That didnt go very smoothly and I ended up stripping the nut and the bolt its connected to. I looked for replacement parts but the best I got was a scanned file of the entire shift/brake assembly but no shifter diagram. With this lever broken, what are my options to repair? My current thinking is to get a replacement shifter and hack off the shifter mount on the brake lever. Would that work? Any and all advice is appreciated!

mechanically sound
That would work, or you could get a new shifter/brake lever combo of the correct number of speeds and brake type.

The exage stuff was close to the bottom of the barrel. I would probably replace the whole unit.
