3-6 days a week. I commute 2-6 trips per week, plus mt biking on the weekends. The commute is 18 miles, one way. The bike only takes 20 minutes longer. Much better for my metal and physical health. Beats sitting in the cage of the car.

I try to get out at least once or twice a week. When it is warmer out and more light outside, 2-4 times a week. Less light and colder months is maybe once a week.

Even people who do have to work and love to ride can cover that kind of mileage. an hour or so a day is all it takes.

Sorry if my comments seem " daft " but I'm new to all this. Also when I was working I was out of state or out of the country all the time so even an hour a day would be impossible for weeks at a time. Fortunately I'm retired now and can ride every day. Nana Nana Boo Boo!

During my second year of cycling "seriously" (avidly, regularly), I proudly proclaimed to my boss at the time that I had ridden 1000 miles the previous year like it was a massive amount of cycling.

"Oh that's nice", he said. "My wife and I usually ride around 3-4000 miles/year, and have been doing that for a decade or so now."

Ah. So 1000 isn't really all that much.

But it inspired me to ride a whole lot more. I figured, if they could do it, so could I!

Your boss probably had the opportunity to take more leisure time off than you did! To most (if not all) non cyclists a thousand miles a year on a bike would seem like a LOT of miles. 6,000mi? Most people would say "you've got to be kidding"

Maybe so. On the other hand, this is a cycling forum - and as many posters have pointed out, it's very easy to cover 6000 miles in a year. That's only about eight hours a week on the bike. Just using the bike for a short commute to work will add up to that sort of distance.

No ... he owned his own business. He was there a whole lot more than I was.

And yes, non-cyclists might say that. But we're cyclists.

If you were on a runners forum and were feeling really good about running 5 miles a day, 2 days a week ... you'll likely find other runners doing double, triple or more than that.

For me biking is basic transportation, but then again, I live in the Netherlands. If it's not raining I'll take the bike for all my errands.

I see some people ride 5-6 days a week and at the end of the year/season amass up to 10,000 kilometres. To me, that's insane.
I ride 5-7 days a week and got over 10,000 miles (16,000+ kilometers) last year, including trainer time (if the trainer doesn't really count, it was still 7,150 miles (11,507k) on the roads). And I don't even race (except one or two Merckx-style time trials a year) or do randos. I'm just a Cat Sixer who loves to be out there pushing myself on the bike since it makes me feel like a kid again at age 56.

Then again, I am legitimately cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs. So I guess that's at least one correlating data point showing it is insane.

I will likely hit 6000mi/10000km by the end of the month. I have a full time job and family. I have taken three weeks off from work this year, but was totally off the bike for those trips.

these days, down to 2-3 lunch rides a week and no longer doing the club ride. As my new baby gets older, I'll hope to escape on saturdays again but hasn't happened yet. baby is 3 months and was a huge switch, I have 3000 miles for the year already, and 98% of those was before May. 150-200 miles a week, now doing 200 miles a month

I've been out of cycling for over 20 years, and I just started to get enthused after buying a bike last year, so its not that I'm lazy, but I'm just old and I don't want to go beyond what my body can handle. I've got it up to 5 times a week, and 8 miles a trip, so about 40 miles a week. Not much compared to most of you, but I'm getting addicted, and really enjoy it. Next month my goal is to increase my rides to 10 miles a day. So far I've actually only done 400+ miles this year, so I have a long way to go to really get into shape. I'm clearly a work in progress.

In the spirit of the original question, I'll give my answer. It seems that since I've become an almost full time bike commuter in late July, I no longer cycle at all. I have taken only ONE bike ride for recreation/pleasure since I began commuting. All other rides are utility/shopping or commuting.

I no longer have the desire to just ride for fun. I get in plenty of bike time.

Plus, my wife seems to have become more possessive of me and my time since she now believes that I get enough time on the bike. Funny how that works...

On the surface it seems 6,000mi. a year is a LOT and 10,000 is crazy but when you break it down to how many miles per day it sounds more doable/reasonable. In any case, it's all good. I have a lot of respect for people who work a 40+ hour work week, raise a family and STILL find time to ride 6,000mi. a year or more. I'm retired so I have no excuse except that I have a lot of other interests and hobbies that take up more of my time. I do find the cycling to be more and more enjoyable as I'm getting in shape and no longer suffer from saddle soreness. I would love to be able to ride my bike on errands but the busy road out of our development really scares me. It's a 55mph posted speed limit but generally people go much faster and I'm just not comfortable riding on the shoulder. Reading about the cyclists being killed by motorists doesn't help plus I'd have to put a basket on my bike and that just isn't cool.( ) J/K

From the 2013 thread, Annual PISSING CONTEST: Your mileage for 2013

I charted the first 125 reports of mileage, and included total elevation if they reported the number. Of course, these are self-selected comments, and more likely to be riders that do a lot of distance.

A lot of riders were in the 3,000 to 4,000 mile range, which is about 5,000 to 8,000 km. That's usually where I end up, with a lot fewer rides in Dec, Jan, and Feb.

And about 50 feet per mile (or about 10 meters per km) is also very common, with high mileage riders often riding hillier routes.

Daily commute is 18km each way, between 30 & 42 mins depending on wind
a longer hillier ride at the weekend

Well if it is not raining, hot, too cold, and I can get up early enough before work maybe 3 times a week.
