Proudly deaf cyclist!
I'm deaf cyclist in carmel, Indiana. I often feel a tense/vibe in my stomach as if I was holding up a LONG ride whenever I rode on the right side of the road. And when I feel that, I often are determined to pedal as fast as I can so the cars can speed up. Nowadays people live in fast times. When I ran out of energy I had to pull over for a water break or to catch my breath, when I do that, there were only one car or two but senior citizens. I often rode on sidewalk if it's during traffic because I commute on single speed. But when I do, I saw an older cyclist(70 appx) riding on the side of the road like he doesnt care whos behind it and he was riding in his pace. That had inspired me to Not really care for being deaf and show that I can ride a bike on the road and take my time to grt to point B. I just wanted to share this with you guys.

I am deaf too, and I have been riding on the roads since 1976 or so. My keys are using a mirror to keep abreast of traffic behind me, and following the advice of the old Effective Cycling rules. Which means, basically, that I own the road and will cede it to drivers only when it is safe for me to do so.

I'm deaf in my left ear and profoundly HoH in the other. I just ride low traffic roads, or look over my shoulder a lot.
If I need to take the lane downtown, so be it. I can keep up with traffic anyway.
