What's The Oldest *NEW* Bike You've Seen On The Sales Floor?
So, in another thread, a poster mentioned a 2013 Trek (brand spanking newe) that was still on the sales floor of a local LBS- with only a $300 markdown from it's original price (!!!!!!)- A 2013 model, NOW, in the 3rd quarter of 2015!
I was thinking that this has to be some kind of record; a testament to an LBS owner who is completely clueless about business/finances- but it got me wonderinjg, since on the whole, LBS owners seem to be bad business-people, what is the oldest NEW bike anyone here has seen for sale at an LBS? [Not talking about NOS classics which were discovered somewhere and put out for sale- but actual stock that a shop was trying to sell since it came from the factory)

yep, I thought so... the bike was less than half of the original price... and I like the components on it better than the new bikes...
I took the original tires off, put some schwabe ones in 35 on it and use it for my bad weather, bad road and MUT bike.

I saw some 1992 Raleigh women's road bikes that was brand new at one of my local bike stores. This was a few months ago. They sell new and used bikes, and also help sell off old Raleigh inventory! It turned out they found the 6 or so bikes boxed up when cleaning up the warehouse. Lugged steel frames. They referred them as needed, replaced the tires etc. They were a steal but I had already picked out my dream bike.

All this assumes that an "older " bike is somehow inferior. This is not always the case. Sometimes, in order to hold a price point, bicycle companies actually downgrade component specs. This means, that even at the same price as a new model you are getting a better bike. North Americans tend to look at bicycle model years in the same way they look at car model years. They always expect that a more recent model will be better that the previous version. That is pretty true when you are looking at cars, but it does not hold when you are looking at bicycles

I actually bought a bike that was over two years 'old' according to the frame build date. My 1975 model-year Fuji S-10S has a build date (month) of Sept 74, and I bought it in October of '76 - for 15% off MSRP.

A few months back a shop had some 2014 Raleigh Revenio 3 bikes in a beautiful blue color for around 1 large. Had I not been broke I would have bought one, even though I already have that base covered.

It's just that if I'm gonna buy a bike that they couldn't sell in 2 or 3 years, you can bet i'm going to get it for what it would sell for used. It would be retahded to buy a stale bike for only a few hundred bucks off of new price, and then hear a slide-whistle doing a decrescendo as you walk out the LBS' door, as the bike becomes instantly worth $1000 less than what you just paid for it.

There is a bike shop near here run by a colorful character. He has several new frames from the mid-90's onward hanging from the cieling of the shop: Viner, Basso, Serotta, Colnago, Pogliaghi, etc. They all still have the original price tags. You can talk him down on the price, but first you have to convince him that he should sell it to you, you know, that you're the kind of person that appreciates it and will provide it with a good home.
Last year I bought a 1992 Basso Loto from him to build up for my brother who was going through chemotherapy (his first good bike had been a Basso bought new twenty years ago.) After quite a bit of haggling, I paid half the original price. BTW my brother is doing fine.

The bike that turned me fully bent was a brand new left over Tailwind that was a year old. Best bike deal I ever had.

I was looking at a new 2013 Allez Race back in May that my LBS had on the floor. The owner would only come down 10% on it. I went with a 2015 Fuji Roubaix 1.1 with better components and 11 cog for less $. No regrets. He has a bunch of 3-4 year old bikes on his sales floor.

I got a 2002 Cannondale Road Warrior NOS at a shop in 2009. Even the owner didn't believe me when I told him about it, he had to look it up. I got a good deal that day.

I think a Jamis dealer can still order bikes from many years ago, so you will occasionally see some pretty old ones on the floor. Why any business chooses to hold onto old inventory like that is a mystery, but they do. The local Jamis dealer does the same thing. I saw a 2011 bike there a while back, not labelled that way though.

I bought my 2002 Birdy Red folding bike from a local bike shop in 2007 IIRC.
