Wide MTB/Gravel Shoes
I'm looking for a pair of MTB shoes for trail and gravel riding. My feet are pretty wide and difficult to fit, and I'm looking to keep it under $150.00. Any advice on brands to look at? I've always ridden on standard pedals and am switching to clipless, and am not familiar with which brands build their shoes more for wide feet.

Lake. End of story. Solved my entire family's plethora of feet issues. Search ebay for your size to get under $150 or so.

Under $150 might be doable....with sale coupon codes. Lake and Sidi Mega are the ones that come to mind.

Thanks, I was not having high hopes there. Saw the cost skyrocketing and fit wasn't happening. Appreciate the referral to Lake.

This is one of those things in life where you truly get what you pay for. Lake has a really good fitting system that you can print off and measure your foot with. Check their website.

Been waiting for thread like this.
Just ordered some MX228 wide shoes for $145.
We'll see how wide they are.
Was also looking at Shimano ME5 but those aren't specifically wide.
Sometimes strapping on the Sidis just seems a bit much.

I just got a pair of Shimano XC7 and found them to be quite generous in width, even wider than the Giro Privateer R wide version I previously had. Shimano also makes these in wide. They're not $150 but the XC5 is.

I've got a right foot that's noticably wider than my left. Shoe shopping sucks, so I understand where you're coming from. I hated the fit of my old Sidi road shoes, which apparently tend to run narrow. I got a pair of the aforementioned Shimano XC5s recently and am pretty happy with the fit. Amazon has them for $150 with free returns if you want to try them out.

Specialized Comp MTB shoes come in a wide version. Long lasting and comfortable shoes. They go for $150.

Lake Cycling Shoes
Yeah, those are nice - I took a look at some of them online yesterday. I kind of liked the MX176 wides. Impressed with the Boa closure system that they use on their shoes.

I have the Shimano XC5 with laces, this can be an option for wide feet because you can adjust to your preference. No problems with the laces and the chainrings.

I'm impressed.
Ordered on the 4th, would have gotten it yesterday if I had been home. Pretty good considering the shoes came from the Netherlands!
Lake vs. Sidi:
Look pretty close, but the Sidis are just a tad wider. I'd say like EE compared to EEEE.
Still okay for my feets.
If you need really wide then go with the Extra Wides.
Rubber side:
What's great about the Lakes are the wide treads.
The Sidis take practice to walk in; lots of side to side movement.
Lakes feel more like normal shoes, well normal shoes that don't bend.
I like the carbon sole.
I had some Spesh MTB Pros with carbon soles and liked them so much I wore them until they died.
Another thing I like is the squared off recessed area. I won't have to trim the shoe shield like I did on the Sidis'; cutting stainless ain't exactly easy.
Boa works as advertised.
IF you use Crank Bros. you get a warning to install with shims/shoe shields or warranty void.
I thought I had a spare set of shoe shield here but I can't find them so I may wait until they come in.
I'll report a bit more once I try em out.
Remember though, the Lakes are half as much as the Sidis.

MX228 fitted with crank bros cleats:
Nice shoes.
Stiff without feeling like you're walking on Japanese geta.
Stable walking off the bike.
Would buy again if I needed to.
Last thing, I feel like I've been living under a rock. Changed out my old cleats with the new Crank Bros cleats and what a difference! New cleat engages way better and more positive.
How long have the new cleats been out?
