Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lance Armstrong votes for Waipio Valley Road in Hawaii (25% average for 0.6 mile).
But if you know of something tougher, he's willing to try it.

Google Sightseeing lists a few but no info on distance. The video for the PA street though is rather funny.

Lincoln gap in Vermont has a stretch over 1/2 mile at 22% or so, that was the hardest climb I've done. I believe it's the steepest paved in the US...

Those are all maximum grade, not average grade over a meaningful distance.

Sounds like he will try it (if you make a donation to Livestrong).

The steepest grade in the world is the one you're climbing ... and then posting about on bike forums.

The road I'm talking about is in Spain (near Zahara) and I would love to go back...maybe even with Lance! Too bad I don't have $10,000 that I can donate right now...
Anyone wanna get some cash together and make a spring training trip out of it?

Canton Ave. in Pittsburgh has a grade of 37%. It's not half a mile long though.

I've done Canton on a number of occasions, it is pretty hilarious to see cyclists have to unclip and then slide back down on the cobbles. It is the steepest residential street in the world, unfortunately its only like 1/10 of a mile long.

Is that average grade or maximum? Maybe it does't matter on a real short road anyway, though.

Only 350 meters long. Half a mile would be 805 meters.
This same article says Baldwin has a maximum grade of 35%, but Waipio has a maximum grade of 45%.

I walked up this street one time. It is short, but crazy. One of the residents was this little old lady sweeping her walk- it was a miracle she didn't fall off the hillside.

From Wiki:
"In November 2009, three men were charged with disorderly behaviour and dangerous driving after taking rides in a chilly bin being towed behind a car down Baldwin St.[10] One of them said it was because the bars had shut and they had nothing to do."

I have also walked up this street, I stayed in a youth hostel near the top on the right, at the time I had no idea it had any sort of record or top position, I just knew it was really really steep!
