$10,000 to have any bike, what would you guys buy?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I honestly can't get my head around a $10K bike. Can't even generate a fantasy worth $10K....

If I had ten grand to spend, I'd buy THREE bikes (cf road, fs 29er mtb, and a FAST 'bent). A three-grand bike in any of those categories would give all the performance I could use, and $10k bikes tend to be either too pretty or too fragile for me to use as daily riders. 'Course, that's just my take on it. You're entitled to your own opinion, no matter how wrong it is. ;-)

ps - second thought, I might just keep the bikes I have and spend the ten grand on a nice cycling vacation in Europe. Hmmm....

I wouldn't spend $10,000 on one bike. I would buy 3 or 4 with that.

You're wrong there my friend. I know that Dario Pegoretti has worked with Columbus, and Dedaccai before that, to have tubes drawn to his specifications. I'm pretty sure that Richard Sachs and probably Sacha White do the same.

I would do a custom firefly like this, but have an intergrated seatpost, internal wiring for Di2, and a lightning crank setup.

Not to say that your choice is invalid, Brian - just that I don't get it. Each to their own, I suppose
That's exactly it, to each their own . . . one man's treasure is another man's trash. You can't criticize what someone finds value with. Personally I think it's pretty absurd to spend 10k on a plastic, disposable, cookie-cutter bike, but obviously some folks find value in them. Go figure.

Neutralized, and fwiw I used to have a hard time fathoming spending 3 or 4k on a bike. I think if I were to actually do the math (which I refuse to actually do) I may have one now.

I know some people that have and regularly ride $10k bikes and now that seems almost rational. It's a sickness to be enjoyed.

Custom frame (I'm partial to titanium with no finish; small US vendors like NTP start at $1800, XACD built $1300 although Dave Anderson does really nice work in stainless steel starting around $3200 and I might consider a fillet brazed 953 frame with unicrown fork) with sporty geometry but fender clearance for winter riding/rack eyelets for commuting/S&S couplers for travel, Campagnolo gruppo with Ultrashift levers, 32/32 or 32/28 spoke Powertap wheelset (NOS SL+ hub for that classic silver look) with shiny silver rims.

Would end up short of $10K (unless Campagnolo EPS is really expensive and you opted for that) but arguably be as nice as you can get.

Paying $10k for a carbon bike gets you the latest and greatest 'halo' bike. Lighter, stiffer, blah blah blah. As far as I can tell paying Ł10k for a lugged steel bike gets you... a lugged steel bike. There's nothing magic about steel tubes and they can be joined in a finite number of ways. Carbon on the other hand can be laid up in infinite combinations and the top of the line bikes are where manufacturers push the envelope to make things as light as possible but stiff in the right places. Lugged steel can be beautiful, fairly light, and pleasant to ride, but as a technology it's barely changed in the last 20+ years and I really don't see what the $10k incarnation offers over the $3 or $5k version.

To each their own.

Well, there's no way I'm dropping $10K on a bike myself. But if I did have that kind of money to spend on one bike, I'd get the Herse. Unlike Riv and the various other semi-custom lugged bikes, the lugs and bottom bracket are handmade. Like the original René Herse bikes, or Alex Singer bikes, the racks, fenders, and lighting are integrated in the design, not add-ons. Look at the stem with its built-in light switch and brake cable stop. It's those little details that, taken together, require a lot of labor and justify the cost.

Personally, I think my next bike might be one of Mike's TIG-welded Boulder Bikes. But that's not in the OP's price range!
