Peloton advertising
Peleton company has been selling expensive stationary bikes with internet connections and virtual coaches. Mostly in upscale areas with good internet connections and upscale shopping areas. I’ve seen their ads for months. But now the same company is selling stationary treadmills since before Christmas last year. Now I’m seeing hard working runners on these machines with no bikes in sight. But still called Peleton? I guess it’s just another fad that’s been adjusted to follow the losers. So sad.

I don’t like monthly fees that tie into the peleton equipment. Let me buy the bike and not have to be involved with monthly fees

I know several people who are avid bike riders who only ride spin bikes or indoors trainers (Zwift) because of the local traffic, work schedules, family obligations, being dangerous or whatever their reason.
E sports are booming, professional leagues are already in existence. With the life long injuries many of my and previous generations have from being the high school football “hero” not withstanding the CTE and concussions which have been high profile lately.
So while it maybe different and I am not saying it will be the next Iphone, I see continued movement in this direction as technology becomes better and less expensive.
I think the real advantage of this Mirror vs a flat screen monitor/tv is the fact that you can see yourself participating in the class with other people vs just watching something on a screen, it becomes more interactive and engaging, Zwift vs watching a movie.
I agree with the subscription service as being somewhat of an issue but since you would be taking the fitness classes anyway I am not sure that would be a significant difference in cost as I did not look at their pricing.

I started to say something rude, but if everyone stays home maybe that’s good for “real” riders. But if those homebodies wake up and go somewhere it could be bad. What a world!

"Synthetic exercise" is taking over slowly but surely. At some point I think the novelty will wear off and people will want a more visceral experience. Or, maybe they won't and we'll be laying on a bed with electric probes attached to us moving our muscles for us for exercise.
I remember I had a surgery years ago for a broken disk in my back. They were worried about a heart murmur I had but I couldn't jog or walk on the treadmill so they juiced me up with some drug that made my heart rate go from 60 beats a minute to 140 beats a minute in about 2 minutes and I was still breathing normally. It was beyond FREAKY...like I was possessed. My point being they will probably find a way to do this through science not drugs.
Or maybe people will all of a sudden yearn for analog "real" exercise without the aid of any modern electronic technology at all. Yeah, that'll be the day....ROFL!

I know about half a dozen people who have a peloton, and they all love it. I got a free trial through the app last winter, and it's not for me, but I can understand what people like about it. Same as all exercise classes. Some people just like to be told exactly what to do. Now people can get the same professional instruction at home without having to go to the spin studio. I'm all for it. Anything that gets people motivated to exercise is great.
It's 5F this morning in Chicago so I'm going to the basement to watch a movie and spin on my rollers for a couple of hours. My peloton friends don't understand why anyone would ever want to do that.

Being mad at others for exercising differently.
We have one, my wife loves it, I'm not a fan. We also have a CycleOps Magnus wheel-on smart trainer that I'm a big fan of, but my wife loathes. Everyone doesn't have to like the same things. Peloton was crappy by trying to trademark 'Peloton' and go after GPLlama, but the idea of the bike/service itself is fine

They certainly have an intense marketing campaign. One might think the market for stationary bikes was a lot larger than the market for real bikes. Or that the profit margin is high enough that they don't need to sell that many units to justify their saturation advertising.

To each their own and it is better than not exercising at all.
But for myself I see the upfront cost and monthly subscription and figure how many upgrades to my bike I could buy for that. Heck, i was too cheap to buy studded tires this winter, which keeps me in this weekend. but with Peleton money i could buy dozens of studded tires.

Exercise bikes are popular, so are spin classes, so are MMO's. Combining them is natural. There are a million reasons not to ride a bike outside. Some of them are logistical, some of them are emotional, some are for safety. I can absolutely tell you my wife doesn't ever want to get on a roadie bike and ride as hard as she can for an hour but she'll gladly do it alone indoors.

this is a weird thread. A friend of mine is all in on the bike set up. Its very cool and really nice. They do put out a good product but a spendy deal when you only use it 4 months a year in the north. Treadmill idea is good marketing for them. Their ads are a bit over the top though. Who cares what a person uses I guess........

So.. can you actually pedal a Peloton bike without connecting to the live service? ie. does it work like a regular workout bike otherwise?
Put in a different way, it looks like you could signup for the $20 monthly option and user their trainer-led classes with your own bike/trainer setup.
