Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

fsa rd-88, forte titan, mavic aksium, or ? for $200 training wheels

a family member of mine is looking for some shimano compatible "training" wheels for their road bike. they weigh about 120lbs...

here are their requirements:

under $200
long term durability
stiff
looks weight

i know $200 is not much but they are on a tight budget right now.

My training wheels are Aksiums and I have beaten the crap out of em.... They haven't let me down yet. Nothing fancy but durable. Isn't that all that really matters?

neuvation m28s can be under $200, or practically anything on ebay would work.

Forte Titans! I'm 117 Pounds, still in true after about 300 miles, no flats, considerabley light at 1755g, and i dropped about 2.5 pounds from my bike replacing the stock bontrager ssr's. I totally recommend it based on quality, weight, performance, oo and did i say style?

I've had two different sets of Titans over the years and never had a problem. Those are great wheels for the money, especially if you wait for one of Performance's many sales.

you're 117 pounds, why would any wheels go out of true after 300?

i vote for fulcrum racing 7's btw

I think you would do fine with titans or aksiums. If you have a PB store nearby, get the titans, you can bring them back if there are problems. Mail order is more of a hassle with performance. If you MUST do mail order, you may want to consider the neuvations, I think they have a sale going on now.

Don't skimp on rubber, get a set if conti GP 4000s' for them if you can swing it.

117 lbs and 300 miles - wow, you're really killing those wheels.

You dropped 2.5 pounds going to 1755g wheels? That puts the other wheels at about 2900g. Crazy.

Are you sure about that weight of the SSR's? I also have the 09 Trek 2.1. I e-mailed Trek asking the weight and the park number the rep gave me was a range of 1900-2000 grams, but the rep said there wad nothing in the parts books to give a definitive answer. I have seen numbers on another forum of 2150 grams. Do you change the tires and tubes when you also changed the wheelset?

I am in the process of changing wheelsets on my Trek, but the weight difference is only 1 lbs. with a tire change.

Aren't Forte Titans and Neuvation M28s believed to be pretty much the same wheel (with perhaps minor cosmetic differences)? I'm not sure about the FSA just because I don't have any firsthand or secondhand experience. Aksiums can be had relatively cheaply right now from Performance along with the Titans.

Why not just get Mavic Open Pros w/Ultegra hubs which are universally recognized as being undestructable?

Depends on the builder but I have 105 hubs on CXP33 rims and I use them in preference to the Aksiums- that I use as winter/foul weather wheels.

I love my Aksiums. I use them for commuting so I'm always hopping curbs and hitting potholes with them and they've never gone out of true.

Check out Planet X alloys. They are $149+shipping. Real weight with rim tape is less than their claimed weight. Probably will average around 1650g for the pair with rim tapes. They do come with skewers that weigh 101g total even if you don't order them (an $19 option I believe). Really easy to deal with but too bad they over stated the value of the shipment and killed me on customs but I'm in Canada.

Yup. I run a set on my C-X bike.

I bought them because I thought they would be cheap and disposable. Well a full season of mud, jumps, abuse and neglect and I have not killed them.

Funny.

I sometimes feel sorry for the schmucks at my local Performance store who come in and pay the price on the tag. I always ask for the price on the website, which is usually a lot cheaper, plus use the coupons etc.

I've had a pair of all 3 of these wheelsets at one point or another, so can chime in.

-Forte Titans: bought a pair w/o doing any research after wearing through the original rim on my Kona Jake. They flexed like hell (I weigh about 165), so I took them back to Performance, went down the road to REI, and bought:

-Aksiums: put probably 3K miles on these with zero issues. They were nice and stiff, stayed true, easy to clean, etc. Cons were the bladed spokes caught the wind a bit more than round ones, and they're heavy.

-FSA's- came stock on my Van Dessel and I rode them for about 1,000 miles before getting rid of both them and the Aksiums for some Ultegra/OP's. (I went through this phase where I fancied myself a dirt road rider and got it in my head that I need nothing but 32-spoke wheels. Misguided probably, but have been happy with what I now have.) Had no problems with the FSA's but I liked the Aksiums better.
