If you choose to knowingly go where you will most likely find trouble is it really self defense if you get into an altercation? It’s a fine line but starts to sound like vigilantism.

take 1 year off from cycling. take martial arts for a year. register your hands as lethal weapons (had to throw that one in there)

aimlessly cycle the globe, and each small town that you enter, ensure people that you are not looking for trouble

The OP claims to not be afraid of anyone or anything. As such, I don't understand the point of this thread. He should know how to handle himself.

Ugh, this thread now qualifies as an A&S topic. Moved from General. Keep in mind, NO firearms talk allowed. None.

Whenever something like this happens, notify the police. As was brought up in the last thread that got locked, the next time that a group of "teens" or "youths" decide to harass or assault someone, the victim might not be able to defend themselves or be able to elude the attackers. Police are often very aware of who the bad actors are in most areas.

As for pepper spray, I always carry it when I ride and have yet to hit myself. There are several dogs though that have advised me that it is quite effective. Now bear spray, that is a different animal.

Also, mace doesn't really incapacitate, and you might end up just making them crazier.
How about bear spray? And a little brass bell?

This is barely a bicycle issue at all. To me, this is a lot like asking "what should I do if I have a heart attack while riding a bike?"

The options of protecting yourself from assault are the same whether you're on a bike or not--avoid, flee or fight back. The best strategy is going to be so situational and based on one's personal capabilities that it's really hard for me to see that this is a conversation that will produce anything useful.

Notifying the police is a no-brainer, agreed.

Not that I have any experience with this, but we have had a few postings from bicyclists who have accidentally pepper-sprayed themselves, and I would think the angle of spray is going to be quite different if you're spraying a human instead of a dog, much closer to your own eye level.

Things that deter dogs don't always work on people, BTW.

A tad off topic. Last year a friend was over and we were discussing my annual ride out of Alberta back into the states through the Canadian Rockies. I explained about having bear spray as a precaution and showed him a can that I had brought home. We went into the back yard as it was a calm evening and I end a short blast at a tree several yards away to show how far it would spray the cloud. My wife was on the back steps behind us observing. About 15 seconds later I heard her coughing and scrambling to get back into the house. I followed quickly to ensure that she was okay and ended up getting caught in some myself. Not much but enough to let me know that I would not want to get a full shot of it anywhere near me.

Punctuation -- a left-wing conspiracy designed to make ranters look psycho.

Trying to figure out the point of the OP's opening sentence. Are you really looking for information? What's the point of this being for "men" and not "little boys?"

Anyone who's never been assaulted is a "little boy?" Only real men get assaulted? Or do only real men defend themselves? Where are you hoping for this thread to go?

What about women? Are they not allowed to chime in here?

OP went on my ignore list a while ago. I'm generally responding to the topic.

The loss of your input is sorely felt, almost as sorely as its presence might be.

Credit for the paranoid "The Deep State moved the thread" type of line. Best laugh I've had all day.

You and a couple of others didn't like the way the OP asked the question last week and you whined about it for days

Now the OP started the same thread exactly the way you all said he should have done it the first time, and you're all still whining about it anyway.

He got the crap kicked out of him and you don't want him to speak about it for some reason. As though you can just ignore crime and maybe it'll go away.

Why not, in a thread about self defense?

I'm not asking this to be antagonistic. I'm just curious.
