Question Overlays i.e. spped, BPM, HR etc in video?

I see a lot of online race videos where there will be an overlay that shows many of the rider and bike's metrics on the screen. How is this done? I will be videoing my rides with a GoPro while using a Garmin 530 for the stats.

Garmin quit making their VIRB action camera just a little while ago. But those had the ability to mix in information from a connected Edge or other Garmin device. I don't know if GoPro's do this to as great an extent.

If the race videos you are talking about are from television networks... well they have a lot more ability to do on the fly mixing of stuff for the live broadcast.

Thanks. I guess I need to look into this more with the GoPro people. I'm talking about just a regular guy like me being able to have my metrics shown in the video. I guess they don't have to show while I'm riding but I thought there might be some software package that is used to sync the video up with my Garmin FIT file and edit the metrics I'd like to show in the video.

If you use an older operating system (Win 10 or earlier, I think) you can still use the VIRB software. Otherwise, there are other software packages that will use the data from your ride and allow you to insert it into the video. I think Dashware is free to try.
With Win 11, VIRB no longer allows you to synchronize data to a video segment. There used to be a map where you could find an intersection or landmark in your video, and then go to that point on the data stream to match things up. That no longer works. For a while, I was just starting the GoPro and the Garmin at the same time, recording the entire ride, filling in the data for the whole video clip (took hours) and then using video editing software to grab the section of the ride I wanted. Unfortunately, I found out you have to make sure your Garmin doesn't Auto-Pause when stopped, or the data / video gets all messed up afterwards.
Here's a Dashware clip:
The woman in front in the video is 72 and was recovering from surgery. A group of us rode with her to make sure she would be okay.

Here's a VIRB clip of the complete ride. (if you watch the whole thing, you'll see how the data gets out of sych after a stop)

I used the Virb software in the past but not since moving to Windows 11. My Wahoo Bolt computer can record the screen which could be added to a GoPro video. I don't use my GoPro for the whole ride so I would need to edit the Bolt screen recording. I haven't tried that yet but thinking about it. I tried Dashware but it isn't a quick learn so I went back to Virb. The 530 also has screen capture according to Garmin.
Select the setup menu (tool or 3 line icon).
Press System.
Press Display.
Press Screen Capture.
Select On.
Press Ok or check-mark on message screen.
Press and release the Power button.
Maybe a split screen video with the 530 screen capture and GoPro video?
I found this on YT:

I found this video about adding the information to GoPro video using the GoPro Quik app on a phone. Neat. I had no idea this existed.
