Anyone planning on riding the Tour de Summerlin?

I just came across this. Suprisingly, I've never heard of it before. 20, 40, and 80 mile rides.
I'd only be interested in the 20 but at $95 it seems kind of steep for entry. Have I been out of organized rides for too long? Is that price the norm now?

Of course I'd have to get in some training to do a ride. I haven't been riding enough to call myself ready..lol

I’m on the same boat but I’m in phx so no go for me. At $95 entry if it’s going to a good cause I’d do it otherwise no.

I just checked into it myself and the registration is now $115 for any distance. I agree with you that $95 feels kind of steep, much less $115! I was thinking of the 40 mile distance. If it's the same price regardless of distance, I think that wouldn't be a bad length. Not ready for 80 miles yet. Building up slowly. I've got a few 50+ rides under my belt but I want to get fitted before I venture off for a 5-6 hour bike ride.

This particular ride had shown up on my radar. We have family who live in LAS so I thought I might double up i.e. Ride and Visit relatives along with a bit of gambling. If in fact it is $115 to ride that's going to add to $200 a night for a room and $100 in gas to get their from Los Angeles. It could turn into a very expensive weekend.

The one thing to consider are the temps. Although the 80 mile ride starts at 7am... I would be finishing around 10-11am and it's going to be HOT.

Those registration fees sound about right. PBAA even charges Bike Patrol members for registering to volunteer and provide on-ride support, but the low rate ($20/$30 late) probably just covers all the food we eat along the way.

If local agencies require the use of traffic control and hired police officers for a bicycle event, that can really increase event costs. A police officer at one intersection directing traffic will cost $500 or more for half a day's work and then multiply this by the number of intersections required to be controlled in the special event permit. They may also require signs and cones, but these are a rounding error compared to officers and electronic message signs. For a major all-day event in an urban area, the traffic control costs alone can exceed half a million dollars, and the cities typically won't do it for free.

Even small club events with no traffic control are seeing big increases in costs for food, especially if the finish-line meal (a big draw for some) is catered. If the club reimburses fuel costs for support and volunteer vehicles, that can add up as well. Many clubs count on staying in existence from the surplus revenue of 1 or more events per year, and if their costs are escalating that means less revenue for keeping the club going.

I don't think your temperature concerns are necessarily a deal breaker. My experience in the 25+ years I've lived in southern Nevada is the seasons seemed to have moved back 4-6 weeks. Still gets hot, still gets cold. But now instead of the heat really turning up in May, it can now be well into June or even July before we get the heat people typically think of when they think of Las Vegas. And that heat tends to stick around, so instead of the temperatures dropping quickly around the back half of September, it stays hot well into October.

Similarly, winter and spring follow a similar pattern. I remember back in 2007, I broke my ankle pretty badly and was on crutches for several months. I distinctly remember a day in March that hit 93 degrees. I think we're barely into the 70s this March. Now, I don't live in Las Vegas any more, but I still wake up to overnight lows in the 30s, even half way into March!

I would be surprised if it hits 80 by noon on the day of this event. Don't hold me to it. I'm no better a prognosticator of the future than the paid weathermen on TV. Just my two cents.

I'm still considering the event (probably the 40 mile entry) just for S&G. Haven't decided whether to pull the trigger though.

Can't help you with the expenses. Sorry about that. But have you looked into rates at Red Rock Casino? There's also this new one, Durango Casino. They may have some good rates being so new.
