Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's OK, the NY Hasids aren't the only ones who freak out at the sight of well-rounded lycra. The subject is raised by neo-Puritans regularly right here on BF.

For once, I'm with the "Hipsters."

You don't have to go to the MidEast to find religious police. They're right there in New York, USA.

I find it interesting when religious groups place the blame on other people to mask their own weak will at resisting temptations cited in their religious texts; if you're not supposed to stare at members of the opposite sex then it's up to you not to do so. The Hasidic community is a pretty closed off group but the city keeps growing and culture clashes like this are probably going to continue. I respect the rights of people to practice their religions but they too have to be mindful of the fact they do not live in a city that shares the same beliefs and while neighborhoods might be composed of certain ethnic/religious groups it doesn't make it "theirs" legally. Paint the lines back and if they don't want to look at people on the bike lane they can build walls on the curbs.

Women in spandex unduly entices our Muslim brothers. For the sake of diversity the ladies should be required to dress modestly and respectfully. Those of us with Muslim sympathies would be willing to serve on the morals patrol if we get long enough sticks and the freedom to use them. Diversity is after all and as we saw down in Ft. Hood, the most important virtue.

Something I meant to comment on earlier: Women in spandex aren't too much for Brooklyn; they're too much for a few religious fundamentalists. The original title of the linked article was "New York City Erases Bike Lanes to Appease Hasidic Men Who Object to Seeing Women in Bike Shorts." Why change the meaning of it?

This story has been reported and commented on all over the intertubes -- Twitter, forums, etc. -- so why creep around on eggshells here? Do we have a large Hassidic community on BF? Surely, if cycling were permitted, the patriarchs would command women to ride side-saddle in Burkas.

Did you even read the article? Aside from the fact that your sermonizing is off-base and murky, Hassidic Jews are not Muslim.

Taliban • Hasidics •Born again fundies
All they can agree on is the oppression of women.
I want a FREE Americe, where they can believe what they foolishness want but my daughter is is still free to work, ride her bike and become president someday.
Why the government endorsed this travesty is beyond me.

And why does removing the painted lines prevent females in spandex from riding through the area?

Event services wins the "Funniest Two Words" award for all of Bike Forums.

UMD gets an honorable mention for the funniest three words...the problem is, those three words are applicable to so many postings here.

in NY, it is legal for women to be topless in public. I think this is a calling for a new kind of protest. a good topless group ride for a few laps around the block with no bike lanes should let them know how effective their grand plan is.
