Hey there, road-forum goers. The holidays are coming up and I thought that a good present for myself would be a new, non-cracked helmet.

I've been eyeing the Giro Atmos because of its 1)Looks 2)Extreme breath-ability and 3)durable construction. But, these thoughts all come to a halt when I see the price. The colorway and size I'd prefer usually come in around $150, and I like to spend no more than $100 on myself at a time, so I was wondering what helmets are comparable to the Atmos for $100 to $115-ish? Will the Giro Saros be a great helmet for my money?

A quick google finds the atmos on sale for under $100 at a number of places.

Bell makes good helmets. The same corporation owns Giro.

I snatched an Ionos 09 for $150, only choice was white, but I wanted it for hot weather summer riding, so the most-reflective color and mega-venting were functionally perfect.

I also got a Bell Variant on sale for $50. It's a very good helmet. A little heavier, and not as uber-ventilated, but it's good. I've previously ridden older Giro and Trek, they worked too.

Oftimes, it's worthwhile to think about the use-based amortized cost more than the upfront cost. Mostly, look for comfort.

Performance often has them on sale, if you're patient.

Part of this depends on your bike. You listed the number 1 reason as "Looks". Then, take a look at your kit and figure out what you wear. For example if you have a pro team kit like Euskatel or Cervelo, then pick the Catlike Whisper Plus.

That helmet will set you back more than your "$100 each time" rule, but maybe you can make an exception.

Print out the lower prices you find on the internet and ask performance to match them. Get the Atmos, great helmet.

Snagged my atmos for $105.

Anyways, definitely check out Bell helmets. They're just as good as Giro, but for less money.

The Bell Sweep is an awesome helmet too. It fits slightly different, but has awesome ventilation and also sits nice and low on the head. They're $120, we actually had a 20% off coupon for helmets at my bike shop, and after tax they were like $101. Bell's are a great deal.

Well, not that anybody was really dying to hear, but I went to my LBS today and asked what they had comparable to the Atmos for $100. They said that they carried Lazer helmets, and that no Giro helmet could compare. I got to try on an O2, and by God, they were right. I'm definitely picking one up.

OK, you started a thread, went to the LBS and found a helmet you really liked, and then you didn't even buy it? What are you waiting for?

I bought an Atmos from Jenson two weeks ago, $89 plus shipping. They had M and L in stock at that time.

Well here is a great thread topic. Why do people buy expensive helmets? Ventilation? In the end, they all protect your head.
