Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm Sorry, Hybrid. Sorry, MTB.

Haven't ridden a road bike since 1999. Ever since I bought a new road bike ('12 Felt F75) 3 wks ago, my hybrid and my MTB have gotten no love Except for 1 ride on the MUP on my MTB, it's been all F75. I'm now even, on a daily basis, bringing the Felt into the family room after work just to stare at it beside the TV while I watch one of my old video tapes of a pro European road race, just like I used to do when I raced (not pro) from '87-'97 I cannot believe it but I'm actually considering shaving my legs again WHAT'S HAPPENING TO ME!!!

If you're not racing there's no reason to shave your legs . . . . . . unless, um, you like it.

I could never understand what's the point of hybrid in the first place. It seems like the worst of both worlds.

I haven't ridden my hybrid in 3 1/2 months since getting a new road bike. And what is this about a supermodel that cooks? Am I missing something?

this isn't far off. and I bought a hybrid.

your first two bikes should be a road bike and a proper MTB that is actually used on trails. after that, you have some choices for N+1. I don't know why the MTB came out on the MUP, unless it was pulling a kid on a trail-a-bike.

whats funny about hybrids is that people who buy them dont understand how much they suck until they actually ride a road bike. My brother and sister in law love their hybrids, hers even has that dumb adjustable height stem that makes me rofl every time. But they love them.

The road bike is the most efficient means of travel on a paved road. It's fast, it's efficient, and it's exciting!

The hybrid is the perfect commuting bike. Most hybrids can be outfitted with both rack and fenders. You're committed to sitting in an upright position so that you can better observe both pedestrian and motorist, alike.
You have the option of either going off road, onto unpaved gravel packed trails, or the paved city street. You therefore, have greater versatility.

With the MTB, you can traverse the roughest of mountain sides, unkempt urban streets, or the smoothest paved thoroughfares of the western hemisphere. Thus, the MTB is the most versatile of all bicycles.

So therefore, let's not let our undying love for road bikes, blind us all from the naked truth, just because we currently enjoy them more. It's just that when you love what you love, you tend to see only what your heart desires.

Reality Value Rating Equation:

Road bike = Hybrid = Mountain Bike

I still like my old hybrid even though its my son's now and I hardly ever ride it. It's almost a road bike though - it has drop bars, but disc brakes and 2300 (I actually like the thumb shifter button).

Oh my god, someone stop this before I dig into my file of inappropriate internet memes.

Cyclocross Bikes = What Hybrids should have been.

On that note though I still loved my Sirrus.

Since getting my road bike in December last year I've put on more than 3000 miles with it, less than 100 with my hybrid, still gonna keep it in the stable though as I might want to peddle to the store and wish to lock it up while I shop. Never will do that with the road bike, it stays in my line of sight or guarded by a trusted person, and I live in a low crime area! Then again I'm married to a fat chick!

Yeah it's the bike that does everything, badly. Much better to have a road bike and MTB and use the right tool for the job.

I have an expensive MTB that I use sometimes. I got my best friend into mountain biking so he purchased a very expensive Mtb. Now I feel obligated to ride every few weeks, while I would rather sell it to buy a third road bike

I had a road bike as a teenager. Rode the wheels off that 10 speed. Then I got old enough to drive and it sat in garage unloved. Later when I went to university I realized how poor I was and how much fuel cost so I parked the car and got an mtb. Why? Because it was eye catching I guess. Ever since its been mtbs. 20 years down the road I'm so conditioned to them that riding a road bike is almost painful. I like my mid range mtb. It does everything I need a bike to do save carrying kids and thats what my commuter mtb does.

As someone who's first bike was a hybrid, I agree, they are the worst of both worlds. I now have a road bike, but feel that the best all rounder bike is a cyclocross bike. I don't go off road at all, so a road bike is fine for me.

I have a carbon fiber road bike that I love. But I also enjoy travelling around, often out of state, riding different rail trails, and for those I take my hybrid. No need for the extra weight of mountain bikes. These two bikes cover my needs well.

I think hybrids have their place. My local shop does several "community" oriented rides (breakfast ride, farmer's market, ice cream, etc) that are intended to be relaxing, easy-going, family rides. My wife and I both take our hybrids (mine with a trailer for my 2 year old) on these rides. In fact, I have take my road bike once, and it was not fun. The pace is too slow and feel too laid back to really enjoy the ride with a road bike. I don't think I am alone in this. All of the regulars on these rides ride something that is not a road bike (though we all own them), mostly hybrids, but some MTBs, a C&V, and a CX. The people who show up in road bikes usually only go once, and if they come back it's usually on something else.

Perhaps a CX bike would suit me just as well, but for the cost and comfort, I find my hybrid to be perfect for going out with my wife and son.

cx bikes often are similar to more sporty hybrids, the just have dropbars instead of flatbars. cx bikes also always have road components, and hybrids usually have MTB components but sometimes do have road.

both of them are good for casual rides, pulling a kid in a trailer, etc.
