Dawes for s24o?
I can't afford much, but I've been looking at a Dawes Eclipse City for s24o/short term touring and commuting.
Does anyone here have experience with this model or similar city bike for short distance touring?

kjmillig, I don't have any experience with one, but it looks to be able to accommodate a rear rack at the least. The components are, as expected, low end, but should be fairly well suited to what you want.

What bikes do you currently have? So long as you can carry the gear you need and the bike fits and is geared for where you are riding (presumably around home where you ride anyways, for S24O), it should be more than suited.
I love affordable bikes, and while that would probably work, I'd be more inclined to search over CL for something lightly used in that price range.

I've been shopping on craigslist and came across a mid-90s Specialized touring bike in my price range. Front and rear racks, bar-end shifters, extra aero bars, fenders included. Chainrings are 50-36-26, cassette 12-28, diacompe brakes, diore deraillures (I think).
Am I perhaps better off spending the same money on an old but solid bike with better components?

I'd go with the Specialized, already set up with the touring accessories, even on shorter tours one doesn't want to get stuck in the boonies due to low-end components. Add 12-32/34 cassette if you're doing hills.

Depends on exactly what it is, what condition it is in, and whether it fits you.
You can find some beautiful bikes, that are much better than what you could buy a similar bike new for, on CL. You can also find a lot of dogs. Most of the battle is in knowing what is worth it, and what isn't.
Any link to the bike in question? I'd be inclined to say the Specialized is probably the better buy, but that would be a guess without seeing it.

If it fits you well, looks like you got a ready to go setup from a owner knew what he was doing. Not positive what it is, but it should do you well.

I did it! I bought the Performance from CL. Very happy with my decision. Solid bike, very well taken care of. Came with 4 panniers, extra tubes and spokes, headlight, taillight, patch kit.
I'm going to put a shorter and taller stem on it (threaded quill) to make it fit me better and give a slightly more upright position. Maybe new tires.

Heh, it does have a "Performance" label but whatever. One can see previous owner was a serious biker that would likely take good care of the equipment. From stem, handlebar & brake lever position they might even be a speedy "randonneur" type so replacing the stem & even the handlebar makes sense.
