New ti-bike 'component' : Altor lock
I have happily come into possession of an object with both function and beauty I thought I should tell you all about it, a humble and lowly bike lock which looks like it could be in the Museum of Modern Art Design wing, it is that sexy.
It is major change for me to not use a "U" lock.. since 1984 that lock was an appendage, an extension of my arm and continued to be for 30 years, besides a brief foray in the 90's with lock and chain ...quit messengering in the fall of '85. I learned to be careful not to drop the cylinder side of the the "U" and watch it roll down the sidewalk into the gutter away from it's "U" counterpart. As messenger you quickly learn to not do that too often since it could end up rolling off the curb and down a sewer. Also, locking and unlocking 40x per day is part of your expediting strategy of getting in and out there quickly.
Now it is down to errands and commuting, smart locking continues with Altor titanium lock unlike my old Kryptonite it 'snap' locks W/o the key, would have saved me a buncha time back in my messenger days and it is one piece, although 'flexible' at the 'joints' and did I mention: Mmmmm, titanium?
Commute is just another word for " Race! " aren't you really 'racing the clock' anyway?
Racing against that other guy with a fixed gear bike or the messenger who passes you effortlessly?
It helps to fine fine-tune your gear down to say, 165 grams..
Never mind this Altor lock is better looking than the bike I ride, and a little cheaper than having to buy another bike.
Actually the lock's price is equal to, say, a nice front wheel, which go missing often enough from poor locking techniques.
You should only buy something expensive, if it is worth it. I think this is one of those cases.
Carbons' efficiency as a frame material never matched the beauty of raw titanium frame, the jewelers' metal of cycling.
Somehow, I want everything metal in my life to be made of drool-worthy purple titanium:

I will buy all the Trek 2300's you can find for $50.00. (This ti-lock is only $180. btw)
