Crankset
I currently ride a road bike with a 52/36 crankset. I have looked at the charts and at a cadence of 60 the difference with a 52 driving a 15 cog vs a 40 on a 15 is about 4mph. That is according the charts. What is the real world experience? 95% of my riding is on pavement, some of it rather rough.
Is the simplicity of a 1X worth the loss in speed? I'm on=ld and slow enough as it is.
Thanks

I have a 1x for mine.
40t up front and I have 2 cassettes a 12-36 and an 11-42. I greatly prefer the 12-36. I rarely run out of gears and I like the tighter spacing.
I use this on an exclusive gravel ride, 700c and 40mm tires. 40x36 gives me the same low gear as my road bike at 34x30. Approximately.
I would not set up a road bike this way. I like having a double on a road bike.

It may or may not be but this isn't the comparison to be making to answer that question. You need to look at upper and lower ranges for your normal cadences, and the % grades you'll be riding up and down. A 40x11 spins out quickly on pavement if there's any downward slope which may or may not be an issue for you depending on your max comfortable speeds and if you're trying to keep up with a group or not.

40x11 with a 40mm tire is 17.96mph at 60rpm.
there ya go- problem solved. Just click down a few cogs on the 40t 1x drivetrain and you are going faster than before.
