Bastide Stayer

An acquaintance mentioned to me today that a friend had given him an old bike frame. A Bastide. And he mentioned that he thinks that it was a "Strayer" which I take to mean a "Stayer". He has the frame but not anything else (including the fork).

The Bastide Stayer is an old (1920s or so) bike for motor-paced speed records and such. Very weird (pic below, from internet, not his frame). Any info? What, if anything, is such a frame worth?

Thanks!

Serious gearing. I would need to be towed, not paced. And that fork is backward.

Well, we don't talk about value here (there's another thread for that: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...th-appraisals/). Bastide was an extremely important marque in its day. I don't know about stayers, though. The fork in the above photo is not backwards; they were made like that to increase steering stability. I'm looking forward to photos!

Wow! Wow! And wow! What a cool bike. And there's nothing wrong with that fork.

Lots of info on Bastide bikes on the interwebs, BTW. The brand is also mentioned in Jan Heine's "The Competition Bicycle".

I feel like they still have stayer races in the post-tour criterium season. But all the videos of modern stayer races are during 6 day races

How many "contraptions" can you find in this photo?

Now I see it, if the fork were reversed the wheel would be way out in front of the head tube.

Another question. My acquaintance has just the main frame (no fork, wheels, etc, pictures are here ). He is thinking of trying to put together a whole bike from the frame. I'm thinking that this might be one of the most difficult and challenging restorations one could do. And, given the rarity of parts, expensive as heck. What are the chances of finding the parts (or having replicas made)? Is this a really challenging project for an expert, or does this careen off into the realm where success is as likely as finding a unicorn?

This fellow is professional mechanic and runs a business. In other words, he has the skill set to do this, if its possible. Is it possible? The other thread has pictures of the frame, so please respond there. Thanks!
