Vintage Peugeot find

Hi All,

I haven't ridden in years, but started looking for a bike. I didn't want to spend a lot, so I was looking at thrift stores and yard sales. Then, last night, I found this cool old Peugeot left out for the garbage. It's in really good shape. Just took a tiny bit of lube to get the derailleurs working right. All I need is a front wheel. New tires and tubes are on the way. And a couple of friends are pretty sure they can dig up a wheel for it. I don't think it needs anything else to be a rider. I'm pretty psyched.

Does anyone have any info on what model this is? I found one that looks identical on eBay and the seller seems to think it's from 1984, but I couldn't find it in the catalog. It's the Carbolite 103 frame tubes. I'm pretty sure it's a lower end model. But it's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. I think it looks need, and I bet it's great to ride. Can't wait to get it going!

Thanks,

Ed

(Edit) Well, shucks. Looks like I can't post pics yet.

Fast eddie 72, you need to have 10 good posts before you can post pics or links. You already have 1 of those posts completed. I suggest going to our Introductions forum and introducing yourself. Then greet other new forum members. Please understand that new members have a 5 post per day limit until they hit their 10 post minimum.

Finding a front wheel shouldn't be too hard, cause the fork spacing had pretty much been standard at 100mm for many many decades. Only thing that could be hard is trying to match the hub and rim brand and models, but if you are just going tor functionality, pretty much any clincher type front wheel should work.

I just got one if those today. Mine was $30 and has no front derailleur. It's a lower end straight gauge tube bike but it's still a nice ride. I bought it to resell but it was still fun stripping it down today. I've got a half dozen FD's and the tires look good so a little elbow grease and some real axle grease and it should be good to go. The kick stand was the first thing to go and I guess the "safety" levers should get trashed. If I can match the light blue paint it should be back in circulation looking good as new. I don't really make any real money but it finances my hobby of putting some nice old bikes back on the road. Enjoy yours.😄

Thanks Everyone,

Jetboy, lived there 15 years ago. I'm in Denver now. But thanks for the offer! A couple of friends of mine are pretty sure they have something that will work. Yeah, I just want it working and something that just looks reasonably similar. I thought about replacing both wheels, but that would cost money - probably a good percentage of what the bike is worth and I'd really like to get it going for cheap.

I ordered new grips, tires, and tubes on eBay for very little money. I wish I could find my old tire tools. I was just out doing a little more cleaning and can't believe how good the condition is. Even the saddle is really good. I just cleaned it with some Mother's VLR that I use in the cars and it cleaned up great. I'm not sure this thing was ridden a whole lot. I just keep looking at it and saying "I can't believe someone threw this away!"

Thanks for giving me a place to vent. I'm really excited about this old bike and my wife is tired of hearing about it. lol

Thanks,

Ed

Those Carbolite frames are nice. I have a 1986 Corbier (aka P4) and ride it a lot, all over Seattle. Looking forward to seeing your pics!

I'm in Denver. I have a front wheel you can have (a nice one, too!). Where do you ride?

Let's go ride sometime. I'll bring out my Peugeot too!

There you go Ed, we realize that you have 5 post limit for today. Hopefully you are still reading anyhow. The C&V is a great place and some fine people frequent the forum. Locally, you can find the nearest Co-op, they tend to be near universities and colleges so as to keep the pieced together bikes students use for transport and getting around the campuses. Someone from Denver can direct you to one perhaps @AdventureManCO can probably point you in the right direction.

Tire levers will be inexpensive to dig up, for that matter, I have an extra set of three of the nested type that snap together and travel in seat bags well, when you have privileges for everything, PM me your mailing address and I'll shoot you off a pair as a welcoming present, kind of a forum warming gift

Bill

Cool bike, is that a 27" wheel? If it is (I don't think I have any 27s), there is a co-op right around the corner from me (Second Chance) that has an overflow of wheels. And I do mean overflow.

You may find a paper sticker affixed to the frame on or near the bottom bracket shell that has the model number on it.

The subject bicycle appears to be a 1984 Peugeot P8 that has been converted to upright handlebars.

Pretty much identical to the '84 P9 frameset I've got.

Wow, what a great group! Thanks everyone!

I'll follow up on a few of these posts over the weekend, but for now, I did find the old tagger on the bottom and it is indeed a P9. Thanks! I think I have a wheel coming my way tomorrow morning. We'll see.

I did put a 26" wheel from another bike on it just to get it on off the ground. I had to take the front brake off to get it on. It's from a mountain bike and the tire is so big it hits the forks. lol So no riding yet. But I wanted to test fit it. This bike is BIG. I'm about 6' and this was intended for someone taller than me. But it's not a terrible fit. I can't get my feet flat when I stand over the bar, but it's not a million miles off. An inch or two.

Okay, that's the update for now. I'm just blow away with how friendly and helpful everyone is here! Thank you very much.

I wonder what it would take to get a little Colorado ride going. There's nice riding to be had now, and a few of us in this thread. Besides, I've got a clunker I'm going to need to put 62mi on

My level of fitness is shockingly poor right now. It would have to be a very short, slow ride. lol It's hard to imagine that I was kinda fit five years ago. Now I'm up to, like, 215 lbs. I get winded walking up the stairs to go to bed. But I've trained before. By fall I'll be at my fighting weight. I hope.

Well, just know if you are ever looking for someone to ride with, I'm game. I'm pretty leisurely. Its easy to think that with what you read on BF you'd think that everyone would be former TdF champions. I can attest to the opposite

Sticker

My $30 Peugeot had a sticker I peeled off for the paint. (See below). The rear axle was completely broken and held together with the skewer. Luckily I have half a dozen laying around. I knew I'd need those someday. So far that's the only issue. It must have been a heck of a crash because the the rear rim is a wolber with stainless spokes versus the Rigida with galvinized spokes in front. It also has a sealed bearing bottom bracket from shimano?

You bet! We'll make it happen.

Well, my friends came through with a wheel. Looks like I'll be up and running as soon as tubes and tires get here next week. Yeah!
