Vintage Steel 1983 King of Mercian Touring Road Bike - 56-58cm Rare!
Asking $950 plus shipping
For sale is a very rare and unique Mercian Road Touring bike, model is King of Mercian, was their top of the line, made in England and special ordered. See photos for the order sheet details. Size is 23" or 58cm seat post size, center of bottom bracket to top of seat post lug or 56 cm CTC. Top tube is 57cm CTC. Bike is hand built with beautiful lug work (long point lugs and heart shaped cutouts) using Reynolds 531C steel tubing.
All original as ordered including front and rear eyelets and mounts for a pair of racks to carry pannier bags. Ordered in burgundy (#56 Deep Plum Pearl) and black paint scheme with lug outlines, Mercian Tange stamped headset, Suntour Cyclone derailleurs, Avocet triple crank with a granny gear to climb anything, Berthet Leotard pedals, Lapiz straps, MKS toe clips, Schwinn Approved bar end shifters, Mafac cantilever brakes and levers, SR stem and seat post, Cinelli bars, Ideale 90 Speciale Competition leather saddle, and Phil Wood silky smooth hubs laced to 27" rims with a 6 speed cassette. Note, I replaced the set back seat post in most of the photos with the straight fluted SR post shown in a later picture.
This bike was set up for and used extensively by the original owner for touring. He rode this bike all over the US. It has 3 bottle cages, pump pegs, and fenders installed. Includes a recent invoice from bike shop in 2014 - replaced brake hoods, brake pads, all cables, tubes, tires, and chain. No miles since this work performed. It's fully detailed, absolutely gorgeous and ready to ride or display as I have done the last few years. I bought this from the original owner years ago with several of his other bikes. He'd retired from riding. It's too big for me and time to make room for others I've collected and ride.
Mercian cycles is a long standing custom frame and bike builder, still in business today and selling this model! Go to Merciancycles.com for more info. You cannot order a custom frame for anywhere near what I'm asking for the whole bike. Enjoy this awesome vintage bike and realize it's also Eroica eligible if you feel like entering one and riding this beauty! Message me here with any questions or to arrange pick up. I will consider shipping using a bike box and BikeFlights which won't cost much at al. Thanks for the interest!
