Cyclist dies after collision with dump truck in North Vancouver

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...uver-1.4995227

So what happened was the deceased was riding west (towards camera) in the westbound bicycle "path" pictured above and got tangled up with some idiot cyclist going the wrong way (eastbound) and was ejected into the path of and underneath the wheels of the trailer.
I passed by just a few minutes afterwards but fortunately was unable to see the carnage.

I hate those wrong-way cyclists.

I always look back, assess the traffic situation, then move over into the traffic lane if clear.

But, those "salmon" cyclists put everyone's lives at risk.

I've encountered a few wrong-way cyclists, and have yelled at them for doing so. Not sure what sort of backwards logic they have for doing it.

The news article says nothing about a wrong-way cyclist. This article says that it was a dooring, but other reports leave it with "under investigation". Looking at the closeness of that bike lane to parked vehicles as well as the traffic on that thoroughfare, I can say that I would be very cautious about riding there.

A few have told me they think they are safer because they can see cars coming towards them.

I think others simply do it out of convenience. They don't have to go out of the way to get where they are going. There are a lot of one-way streets where I live. Riding with traffic can mean extra blocks.

One-way streets I can understand, and probably have done it myself once or twice living downtown Toronto years ago. But the ones I've encountered recently were on two-way roadways, some of which are four-lanes with bike lanes.

In defense of those wrong-way cyclists, it is less likely THEY will get doored as the motorist can see them coming through the windshield. Also, getting doored from the front side just pushes the door closed. Just sayin'.

If you ever lived in a neighborhood where passengers in cars coming up behind you enjoy hitting cyclists with ball bats or golf clubs in the back of the head, you might have greater appreciation for going salmon. I rarely do it, but I get it.

As for the crushed cyclist. That's rough.

Not gonna live in such a neighborhood, or not gonna appreciate where the salmon's motivations for cycling against traffic come from?

The photo above does show a car parked in the middle of the bike lane, but that could have been a witness, part of the accident investigation, or otherwise came after the crash.

The silver SUV partially in the lane has a warning light on top, so likely part of the investigation.

The cyclist going the wrong way. Should have been fined in some way.
