A friend of mine was hit, and damaged both his front an back wheels (Easton EC90aero Carbon Gen6 Tubeless) he got a new bike a few months later.... The front is totally trash and I think the rear is as well.

Unfortunately he passed away in his sleep (at 43 :-( ) and his wife is asking me to help offload all his gear. One item I'm unsure of what to do with is the wheelset... Is it worth saving the hubs/spokes? Rebuild with a generic carbon wheel?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Probably the hubs are the only salvageable parts, and I don't think you'll get much for them. But you could cut the spokes out, and see if someone will buy them.

The front rim is a complete loss as you noted. The rear may be useable but that's only a guess as I obviously can't see it in detail. I'd have someone knowledgeable at a reputable bike shop inspect it and decide. Rebuilding those wheels with decent generic carbon rims would probably cost more in materials and time than you would recover from selling them. I recommend cutting out the front hub and seeing if it sells. If the rear rim is damaged, do the same thing.

The rear wheel I *think* isn't any good, but I'll have to see it again. He just had built up a 2014 Propel Advanced SL0 and ridden it one time before he passed away. She still has the water bottle in the cage, and his gloves stuffed into his brand new Torch 3.0 shoes. It's sad/ironic how he got hit by a car, broke his pelvis, femur, knee and concussion... healed up well and built a new bike... only to die in his sleep only a month into his new ride. I appreciate your thoughts and I'll get the rear wheel checked out.

The shop he frequented may be willing to take all on consignment to sell for you. We have done that in our shop under similar circumstances for a good customer a few years ago.

I would say try to sell the hubs, but I'd bet you'd have a hard time finding a buyer for a straight-pull set like that unless they were Chris King or similar. Probably more frustration than it'd be worth.

I've often thought about telling DiabloWife if I were to die, to pick a cycling buddy to sell all my stuff and have him take a 50% commission and give her the rest. Give him enough to make it worth while and not feel guilty about not getting the best possible pricing on stuff that's hard to sell.

I am not a mechanic except for my own stuff so I'm curious - why would you cut the spokes? Bladed spokes are three bucks apiece

I'd take them apart and sell the spokes + hubs. It wouldn't be a big effort to find some generic 38mm and build them back into a decent set of wheels,or someone out there might need spare spokes and/or the hubs.

NEW bladed spokes might be $3, but used ones have significantly less value and might not be worth salvaging. Cutting is fast.
Unless I were transferring directly rim to rim, I wouldn't trust used spokes.
I wouldn't buy used spokes from anybody, I wouldn't trust them physically, and I wouldn't trust the reported lengths to be correct.

...went back to her house. The rear wheel is definitely broken (crack through/through). I let her know everyone's advice and I'll keep you updated.

One more thought, since I haven't seen it offered, is just to sell them as is, with the damage clearly labeled and pictured.

Then if the spokes or nipples or a busted carbon hoop are worth anything to anyone, they can bid.

Downside of this approach is you'll need a wheelbox to ship.

hang it to be sideways from the awning in your back yard, and put several hanging plant pots around it;

you can stand in one spot and water them all that way..

Patch the rims up with Super glue and bondo and sell them on ebay.
