Pictures from our Vintage Bike Party! JVRBG
Hey guys,
Just sharing some shots from the party. A video is coming in about 9 days. We had about 35 people. Many brought bikes to show! Almost had a full house. So glad everyone came. Shared a lot of stories, bikes, drinks and food. GREAT TIME. I'm grateful that everyone came!
I included the a pic from my favorite bike. Brad brought a RICI!

Looks like the party was great, especially with all those bikes to look at and discuss with fellow C&Vers.
I'm wondering though, if there's any way to attract the younger generations to attend such events so they eventually take over from us older C&Vers.
I tried to get my nephew who is 30 years old, interested in C&V bikes for some years already, but it's no dice with him. Anything not CF and monocoque and without disc brakes, just does not interest him at all.
I'm wondering though, if there's any way to attract the younger generations to attend such events so they eventually take over from us older C&Vers.

And yeah I only set the bar at 50 because I am confident 70% of this forums regulars are over that age.
I don't think a downtube friction shifting road bike with narrow bars, single pivot brakes, and non-aero levers is appealing to most 40ish or younger. Or if they have one, it's really just one and is a sort of novelty alongside their modern bikes.
If the same frame has a modern Campy or Shimano drivetrain, cockpit, and wheels?...well that can bring more interest from many for sure.
...can't overcome the lack of disc brakes, but the bike will be 96% of a modern carbon rim brake road bike.

I think it takes age to appreciate finer things, good craftsmanship and timeless design. In about 15 years your nephew will likely be there. That and he'll figure out that carbon fiber sucks as a frame material for anyone who's not in a pro Peloton.

Some are absolute top and amazing rolling mechanical art. Others less so and remind me of the era when used Porsche 911's and 356 were easily acquired for the average wage earner and lots of them got hacked with tacky fiberglass body mods. Regardless, if it makes one happy and that's their time of life to enjoy, I'm all for it.
I let a Motobecane Le Champion go a few years ago. Recently met up with the now caretaker. He rebuilt it with Shimano Ultegra STI dual control, a deep rim aluminum wheelset, including other changes. At least he's riding it.

It was a great event John thanks for hosting us. Lots of great bikes, some brands I've never seen in person and one I'm not sure I ever heard of, Tarrot? is that right? A '60s french bike.
That little white and Red Allegro caught my eye for some reason. It wasn't super fancy but it just had great curb appeal. The Rigi loaded with all that fancy weight weenie stuff was very impressive. Then that XXXX XXXX that showed up was a huge surprise. Unfortunately I didn't take many pics. Lilith really came through in the bike transporter department.

On the topic of modern components on older frames, I am perfectly happy with vintage derailleurs and non-indexed shifting, either downtube or barcon, but I do draw the line at brakes and safety, and I do not apologize for dual-pivot Shimano sidepulls and aero brake levers on the Bianchi.

I always thought there should be some songs about riiding the Lake Front Path. When the weather warms up I should drive over and ride it for a week few times to generate ideas, to mix with my memories from 40 to 60 years ago! Also include Sheridan Road round trip Rogers Park to Lake Forest.
