Personally, I think the Phil cranks are ugly, and wouldn't buy them even if they cost half as much.

I wondered about that, too. I think the claim is legit. According to The Hour Record, the bike used by Merckx to set the hour record was 5750g, or 12.7lbs.

Low spoke count wasnt much of a thing in the 70s. It would be cool if the spokes were tied and soldered.
