Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The good news is that it's roughly 60 miles from my place to Flemington, NJ, which is a perfect distance. The not-so-good news is that the routes will take me through relatively congested areas and a solo ride there has a little more risk than I like. Sad!

Sound familiar??

I'd be scared as hell to ride anywhere in Jersey. We used to ride the dirt road along the train tracks when I lived there in my youth, that was it.

Nothing safer that's not too much more round-about? I'd look at the global Strava heatmap for ideas.

Since 1982, (is that 37 seasons or 38?) I've had maybe 3 saddle sores and i'm pretty sure they were all caused by seam irritation. I know the last one a couple years ago was a seam because I had been having trouble with a sore spot in the same area every time that I wore them. When I finally developed a sore, I finally pitched the shorts. They were old and worn out anyway.

Is the plural of furuncle a carbuncle?

The old, non-padded, non shaped, natural, chamois that got crispy when you washed it, was pretty bad. I was heavy into hydrophobic lube in those days.

I think a carbuncle is just a big-ass furuncle.

Good idea. But when I look at the heatmap it does not superimpose roadmap/names so it's really tough to see the route. Am I missing a click somewhere?

No, you're not missing anything that I'm aware of. Yeah, it's not as convenient as it could be, but I usually keep two windows open, heat maps and Google maps, side-by-side so I can reference against each other. It's also nice to be able to drop in to street view.

There's a menu on the left, if it's closed it'll just be a white rectangle that says "Global Heatmap". If it's opened there will be a Layers > Labels option to click, that'll show street names when zoomed in.

Good seeing you, thanks for driving over! I didn't even get in (that much) trouble. For the record, we both had man-purses with camera gear because nerds.

Back from a short run. Got buzzed by a car not once but twice. Scary.

It seems doubly stupid, but I may have to drive to the MUP to run safely. Then I can get buzzed by the MUP racers, who I can take on in a fair fight.

Did my first group ride in ages this morning! I've been riding in the afternoon like a civilized person but all the group rides seem to happen at the crack of dawn

Kudos! I would say 90% of my rides are group rides. More fun with friends!
