also, approx 90 minutes south is Rock Creek Park in Washington DC, if you like big race paced group rides, the 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. (both are on Saturday a.m.) are options. Here's a link to ride description, but note that they are both on saturdays. https://dcpaceline.weebly.com/dc.html

fantastic road and off road riding in that area
Although it starts in MD, you could build a lot of routes from this. Civil War Century. I've ridden most or all of these roads at some point, generally speaking, they are very rural and have a significant degree of variability of terrain. No super long climbs or high altitude, but many that are steep and approx 1.5 to 2.5 miles in length.

Awesome paint jobs, and they've finally done something they should have done years ago. Discs on an afforadble, aero frameset. Will consider for this for next year if I feel like making the jump to discs.

Anyone know anything about Orange and Rockland Utility or Spring Valley, NY?
Seems like the kind of utility I've been looking for, in a part of NY we might like. Job opening I'm pretty well qualified for. I'll apply regardless, just curious.

Didn't you move recently, like in the last couple years?

out walking the earth
I grew up in Rockland, and my HS girlfriend lived in Spring Valley. I still live on the Rockland border. Spring Valley proper isn't a great town, but Rockland in general is rural suburbia. And there are loads of lovely towns surrounding SV. It's right on the the NJ border or Montvale (when I was a kid Chestnut Ridge was simply a neighborhood in Spring Valley). You could easily live some place with great riding and schools and be a very very short distance from O&R HQ. I'm maybe 20 minutes from there.

Twice, yeah. 2 years ago from NC to PA to my in laws, one year ago about 30 minutes from there to here. Saying it that way does sound a little crazy looking so soon, and staying is an option. One problem is I'm currently underpaid some and the only thing that makes it close to okay is a retirement plan that doesn't fully vest for 6 years, and we don't see any way we stick out this job for another 4.5 years, so it's better to leave earlier than later.

I wonder if I would have done "better" with a bike test but oh well. Not something I'd want to do too often!

I go off first for the TT tomorrow for my cat. Would've liked to have people to chase, but there is only three of us. One is the RR junior national champ who also got second at TT's. Wooo

He is certainly more adapted to cycling but running VO2 tests generally yield higher numbers than cycling tests. I'd wager the numbers would come out pretty close.

my gut tells me he won't make it as far, will wind up with a lower number, and the difference will not be more than the difference between a cycling v running test for someone who is fit/adapted at both.

yes, VO2max, lab-tested, on a bike is generally less than when done by running HOWEVER... as cyclists *most* of us have really poor running form and our legs will give out before our lungs.

My research participation was pretty easy:
- Put 3 little Bluetooth EMG sensors on each thigh
- Rested for a min for baseline data
- Did some maximum voluntary contractions (6 each leg)
- Put on a HR strap
- NIRS oxygen sensor was attached to one leg
- Put on the VO2 mouthpiece and nose clip.
- 5 min easy
- 30W/min steady ramp (not steps) to volitional fatigue
- 1min easy, remove mask and NIRS sensor
- Repeat maximum voluntary contractions test (6 each leg)
They should have had a bigger fan and perhaps a better PM than powertap pedals (the erg was high quality). They obviously didn't care too much about my VO2max - just the EMG data.
Volunteer people - it's free!

Social media and death have not figured out how to coexist yet.
Got a linked in 5 year work anniversary for a guy who killed himself 2 years ago.
I'll probably get a 10 year in 5.
