Talking DIY BATTERY replacement (building from cells)??

anybody here replace their e-bike battery themselves? I have read online that you can order like 50 or whatever number lithium ion AA cells and then solder them together to make for a much cheaper battery replacement alternative

thoughts?

I was thinking of going that route myself, but from what I read you need to weld the cells together, not solder. I guess the time it takes to solder will result in heating the cells too much, and can damage them. I guess the welder to do it right costs a couple hundred bucks, eliminating your savings. I would look into that before building a pack. If you can do that, I see no reason not to diy it! Makng battery backs isn’t that difficult.

Solder has problems. You can't rely on solder joints to add any structural strength. It will crack long term. Heat can damage cells. Better to use a spot welder, but then you have to buy one for $150-200 or build one. Still have to buy nickel strip, spacers, etc. Add a BMS board for $15. Not that cost effective for just one battery. OK if you like to learn new things.

I have soldered up a pair of 12V booster packs taking cells out of a donor battery. That was only 9 cells. Tedious work. First one was OK. second one, I did a lousy job and I haven't used it. It's sitting outside in the grill.

The other challenge (IMO) is procuring genuine cells since there are fakes on the market. Decided it wasn't worth the time for me.
