I have to admit that I have listened to Pet Sounds at least 30 times for every time I have listened to Sgt Peppers over the last few years. Pet Sounds is incredible.

I could get into the Beach Boys a little deeper. I enjoy many of the melodies. Here's a great solo take of my favorite Beach Boys song, coincidentally from Pet Sounds. I can hear the melody loud and clear beneath his chord vamping during his first round through the progression:

Still on the Live (the artist) kick. Show is Aug 15th locally. I first/last saw them in 1992, on Aug 15th, so it'll be 26 years between shows if I go. Having said that I'm probably going to go, bring the Missus.
Live (performed in person) shows tear me apart, it's hard for me not to lose it during a show, whether a violinist in Grand Central in NYC or a band playing a venue. Last time I was so affected was watching a movie, Shine, before I met the Missus. For some reason I completely broke down during the movie. Not sure what happened but I haven't dared watch the movie again. I imagine having played the violin for many years has something to do with it, or maybe I played because of what I feel when there's music?

Went to the Pixies/Weezer show the other night.
We were one of the few people there for the Pixies and not Weezer. The show was good. They played Wave of Mutilation twice, which seemed odd, but they were very different versions of the same song.
We stayed for Weezer - I like Weezer fine; the first two albums are fantastic, but everything since is utter crap - and they just weren't very good. They opened with their five hits - Buddy Holly, Beverly Hills, Undone, Hash Pipe... But it was just kind of a bland and boring performance. They even had costume and set changes, which reminded me of when I saw Weird Al many years ago. Weezer also did some covers, which are basically just rote performances of someone else's songs.

Ooh! An ICP mass spectrometer.. I'd never heard of that before! Seems awesome! I love learning about crazy, expensive tools used in specialized fields.

The ICP-MS is indeed awesome. It's a broadly applicable technique prevalent in many industries, but ours is a bit niche (nanotechnology).
Jazz has to have some structure for me to be into it - I'm big on melody. Underneath (most) jazz tunes, the rhythm section is keeping the tune rolling along in order and the soloist is improvising over the same chord progression. Being in tune with the rhythm section keeps things grounded and is what it's all about for me. I'm not into "free jazz" or totally avant-garde stuff. The local public station here in San Diego has a program that comes on certain evenings called "loosely knit" that makes me feel like my brain is unraveling.

I wonder what you think about Keith Jarrett's "Bop-Be" album. I have loved it since I bought it on vinyl way back when. Maybe a bit more rhythm structure to the greatness of it, but melody does play an important role.

I'll have to check that out. I'm a Keith Jarrett fan as it pertains to the Standards Trio and his fusion work with Miles, esp. Live-Evil. I see that the "Bop-be" album also features Paul Motian on drums who rips. Check out this cover of a Monk tune, these guys are siiiiiiick:

This album popped up on my spotify discover weekly. Love the sound and variance between tracks. I just watched the movie "Annihilation" and the first track on the youtube album gives me some vibes from the end of that. (excellent movie btw, highly recommend if you like sci-fi). This album also has some really cool artwork (coming from someone who used to play magic the gathering).
