Well done sir, well done! This has to be one of the best actual "saves" in a long time. That is going to clean up very nicely and it still has the original Nishiki branded saddle to boot. Extra "pints" for that.

I like the shoulder pad in the frame for carrying. I used those things a lot.

That pale green '72-ish Ford longbed in the background with the built-in tool compartment is no slouch, in the old truck department.

I road around on this for 4 years. Had $90 in it including the Serfas Seca Tires that are not pictured on the bike. Sold for $180. Frame was way to small. Was a neat bike to look at.

I was test riding the Raleigh ST with it's new triplizer when I saw the flourescent signs a block over. Found this absolute time capsule Impact Pro. While it's my size, it's geting a bearing repacks and a tune before flipping onto CL for at least a $100 profit.

I picked up this 1973 Raleigh Competition this morning, pics are from the ad. I'd been watching it for quite awhile and watched the price coming down and offers to sell less wheels, etc. so yesterday on a whim I contacted the seller and asked if he would sell just the frame and fork as none of the components were original. He was more than happy to, in fact he said he had tried that first. Someone has cut the Huret derailleur hanger off but now I can put on a Campy style with no feelings of guilt. It has very good original paint, the Raleigh graphics are in good shape, the "Competition" graphics on the top tube are pretty well worn but it gives it that cool old worn look, the Carlton on the seat tube is a bit better and the Reynolds 531 decals are cracked with missing sections from age but are still recognizable. The chrome on the fork has a lot of wear in spots but no rust or pitting. The whole thing screams "survivor" and I love it! Plans are to replace the hacked off hanger, do minimal paint touch up and polish it it up then build it with period correct Campy NR. If I had to name a Grail bike it probably would have been a red 1971 Raleigh Competition or International. This is close enough. This doesn't change my plans for my other "Carlton" but for some of my other bikes yes. I foresee an almost total "turnover" in the road bike project lineup.

He was about 6'4" 350#. I told him to bring it by and I'd fix it. I guess the will was gone.

Informative because in the UK, Raleigh and Carlton were marketed as two separate brands. My initial confusion prompted some digging and now I know. Many thanks for that and it should be a nice build.

I have a much rattier specimen of your ‘73 that came to me with ruined chrome that I built up with 44/42T chainrings and a Surly Dingle 17/19T fixed cog on one side of the cub and a White Industries 20/22T freewheel on the other for 70-in pavement and 60-in gravel fixed-gear or 60-in general rambling and 52-in gentle singletrack on 35 mm cyclocross tires. Mine replaces a long lost, much missed ‘71 Competition I rescued from a trash heap and foolishly parted with.

Not on par with other trash saves but the timing of it gives me a chuckle.

I was riding the Brompton through my neighborhood this dusky evening when I saw an orange bike flag atop a fiberglass pole next to their trash can. Stopped and asked the couple if I could have it, yes they said. They then asked if I have ever heard of “Free Spirit”. Gave them a good run down on what I knew and they were pleased.

Really pleased when I told them I was now building back up my Austrian Ted Williams Free Spirit to pull my single wheel cargo hauler!

Thats why I need the flag...


Big grocery days ahead and animal rides in the front bracket for sure!

Found for $15 at the co-op. I tried pumping up some tires and the handle was pushed up by the air pressure and the gauge went to 0. Took it apart, cleaned everything and greased the plunger and o rings, cleaned the check valve. Put it back together and had no problem pumping to 120.
