Advice for best "on-road" snacks and eating techniques....
I'm tackling my first century tomorrow. I have ridden plenty of 50+ mile rides and I'm not too worried about the distance, but I want to be able to snack while riding instead of having to stop and get a bar from my pack, etc.
I've seen other cyclists attach their snacks directly to the bike for access while riding.
How do they accomplish this, velcro straps, rubber bands, double-stick tape?
I'd really like to help maintain my average speed and not stop to dig out a clif bar or a gel when I feel the need to feed the machine.
Any advice?

GU Roctane. No muss, no fuss. Good fuel. If you're fumbling for food, use a Bento Box or just tape the gels to your top tube.

I like nuts in a tupper-ware on my handlebar bag.
*ducks to miss getting hit by CO2*
I also like nuts in my...by nuts I mean almonds and such, in a ziplock bag in my jersey pocket. Bananas rock too. As for on the frame, I would use rubber bands.

Tis the season of posts that start with ... "I'm tackling my first century tomorrow" ... and I have a question about something I should have sorted out ages ago, but I'm going to ask it now when it is really too late to do anything about it.
There was another one of these yesterday ... some guy wanting to know how to plan his eating on a century he was riding this weekend.
This is why we build up to century rides ... not only to gain the fitness, but also to ensure that our bicycles fit, that we've got the right saddle, and that we've sorted out what we want to do with the nutritional aspect - what to eat and how to eat it.
Because it is probably too late now for you to go buy a bento bag ... just use your jersey pockets. And if that doesn't work very well for you on this ride, you might want to consider a bento bag for your next one.

I prefer Clif Builder Bars or Jelly Belly Energy Beans, in my jersey pockets. I can eat just about anything while riding, just takes a bit of practice.

These days most people eat bars and gels on the bike. If you want real food bananas a great and the classic technique is to quarter a PB+J and individually wrap each quarter in tin foil.
Also I recommend Clif Bloks. Imagine a gummy bear that has a softer texture so you don't have to chew it a lot. They pop easily out of the package one by one and are more a more 'solid' type of food than gels.
Good Luck

I find opening my mouth, insert food, close mouth then chew to be the best technique.
What to eat- simple, what I like.
Where to put what I like-even simpler- jersey pockets on back.

+1 for clif shots
when i rode a century two years ago my friend made big turkey/tomato/avocado sandwiches on french bread that we separated into smaller sections. eating real food makes a big difference.

It's not a race.
I don't understand why people bother paying to do an organized century ride if you're not going to avail yourself of the stops. Why not just go out and do a solo century?
