NBD - Trek FX 3 and Verve 3
Hello friends,
My wife and i have been talking a lot lately to get back in cycling. Both of us spend a lot of time on the bikes growing up, but as life took over, we stopped riding.
After going to different bike shops in our area and researching we both decided these two bikes were the best fit for us. I chose the Trek FX3 and she liked the Verve 3 as she preferred more comfortable ride.
We are really excited as its finally getting nice out and we are looking forward to start riding this season. Now the fun part is getting the accessories for what we want. I already know i will want to rear rack and front/back lights for both us, to stay visible on the road. I used to ride motorcycles and i know what its like not being seen by cars.
If you have the FX3 share your thoughts and how the bike has held up for you. Anything i should do, upgrade to improve the ride? I would love to hear ideas from you guys. Our bikes are currently at the shop, they should be build today and we will be picking them up in the morning. Pictures to fallow.
Update: As promised here few pictures of our bikes.
FX3
Verve 3
Thanks,
MountainMan

Welcome to the forum, and great purchases! I would ride the heck out of them, and things you want to change will make themselves apparent. Maybe you'd rather a different saddle or different grips or maybe a rack and a trunk bag, etc. You'll most certainly want a couple of water bottle cages. I like the "50 Strong" ones myself, because they fit both traditional water bottles, and also disposable water bottles (which is what I typically carry).

Congrats on your new bikes! My guess is that the FX3 comes with the Elite Blendr stems, in which case I will suggest checking out the Bontrager lights since they mount very easily to those stems. I have a Bontrager Ion 450 front light and Bontrager Flare R rear light. I don't have an Elite Blendr stem on any of my bikes, so I just switch them over. Even without the Blendr stem though, I think those lights are pretty good, especially the Flare R.

Congrats on the FX3, I also just bought an FX3 and liking it so far, it's very versatile, it can go on rough roads and even some hard-packed dirt. You'll be very happy!
I got the 450R ION front light that was mentioned below because it integrated really well into Blendr, but I skipped the tail light. I suppose if you want to invest in the Transmittr system it's worth it but I bought a less expensive Taillight from Amazon which works fine so far.
Also despite the upgrade the saddle is still really hard on sit bones. Get a new saddle and some bike bibs or padded shorts!

The Flare R is $60 for 65 lumens, I got the CygoLite HotShot Pro 150 for $38 for 150 lumens. I’ve heard the Light & Motion lights are good too.

It is not all about the lumens, it also matters how the light is projected out. But yes, if you look at it from this perspective, more lumens, cheaper price, it makes the Flare R look bad compared to the CygoLite HotShot. The Flare R is visible from 2 KM away though and has an almost random flashing pattern, which is really the reason I bought it. That and I am admittedly a Bontrager fan, so I had no issues getting the Flare R. (Note: I am not saying the CygoLite HotShot is not visible from far away, just that the Flare R was tested and made to be visible from far away.)

I got the Serfas RX-921 a few years ago and just installed it on the new bike. It was a good balance between reviews and price. It’s way better than the stock saddle but I don’t swear by it.

I just bought that exact FX 3! Rear rack--my Planet Bike KOKO didn't fit on it, but I was able to install a Planet Bike Eco rack which is more than sufficient for most uses.
