What did you just buy for your gravel bike?

Notices
Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

What did you just buy for your gravel bike?

I have a different version of the camera but being shock proof and water proof makes it a sweet camera. The only suggestion I can give even though it's water proof you still need to carry it in a small cloth camera pouch/bag over the summer. If you carry it in your back pocket your sweat will mess the lens up. Enjoy the camera.

I read a million bazillion reviews and fogged lens was a big complaint. I perspire a lot so it was a concern.

Olympus claims to have redesigned the lens and reviews say that it is a non-issue now. Time will tell.

At my end fog wasn't the issue. You sweat so much in the summer that the sweat will make the lens wet. Just a heads up. The camera shops sell a cloth bag or something like that have no idea what the material is made out of. Once I started using that in the summer it fixed the problem.

Good to know. Thanks!

I have a gas tank type bag for my gravel bike but will likely be carrying it in my jersey on the road bike so your information is appreciated. I'll look for the bag.

I've been using an older version of that camera for several years to take pictures of bats inside caves while doing surveys. It has held up VERY well being drug through muddy/rocky/wet places.

I needed to upgrade a better set of canti's as the ones on my 1994 Super Goose Gravel Beast kinda suxed.
Spent whopping $15 on newer set on sale. Just for the front as the others work well. They do not stop the bike but no rubbing and center well and well they are flawless but as you guessed sux at stopping the bike.

I noticed that Chain Reaction and Jenson both have Shimano 8050 GS rear derailleurs in stock now. This is the first time I have seen them actually available.

Performance lists them as available Jan 12 for $20 less.

Polar M460 heart rate monitor.

It does structured workouts and orthostatic test which my other unit lacks.

$149 from Clever Training through walmart.com.

Competitive Cyclist has the SS and GS in stock for immediate shipping... Strava Premium has a $20 off $100 order or more code.

Ordered one yesterday, free 2-day shipping, should have it tomorrow....NOT what I was wanting to spend NY earnings on right now, but c'est la vie.

Some new bars. My bike always felt a little low in the front, these have less drop a little rise and some flare.
Specialized Hover 15mm rise 12 degree flare (I think they are the model that come on the Sequoia)

Those bars are nice.

I love the rise on my road bike FSA K-Wing bar (similar to above) and I love the flare on my gravel Easton bars. Looks like you have the best of both worlds.

Those look like they are going to be great to ride.

Second disc wheelset that is QR since everything is going larger thru axle so if I total a wheel I will have a compatible replacement.

Some benefit to thru axle wheels even before you get a thru axle fork. Instead of just converting the front to 5mm QR
you can convert it to 9mm axel and it will still fit the standard 100mm fork dropouts but will be stiffer.

Noticed after getting fatter grippier tires and better brakes my QR fork would flex under heavy breaking (wheel would
twist a little) adapted the front hub from 15mm thru to 9mm and it seems to have eliminated the flex and twist.

I'm sure not as good as a thru axel fork but a massive improvement that only cost about $35

Same can probably be done to the rear dropouts/hub, I did not feel I needed it on my frame so I did not bother.

Finally got my new Di2 8050 GS on and mounted...just in time for it to be evil outside. Pbbbbbt

https://imgur.com/a/70Wk9

A few observations:

A) That Shadow tech really does hide the RD much more inboard and safer from tips/crashes

B) The cable port gets situated a bit further away, so more e-tube cable slack is needed

C) The cage is a bit longer....That big/big crosschain sizing I should probably size my chain up a link or two next time.

D) Shimano added a bunch of gearing lockouts with this RD compared to 6870. 53/39 cranks are limited to 2 multishifts, whereas 50/34 have 3. 53/39 cranks have more Full-Synchro shift options (both gearing shift points and the cross-chain limit can be deactivated), whereas 50/34 has fewer (the downshift off the 50 is locked at the penultimate cog, and the cross-chain stopper is locked on).

E) The B-screw is much longer with more threads. Stop screws come retail almost completely backed out, stop screws also feel more firm in their threads

F) The mounting is a bit funny compared to 6870, check the 8050 Dealer's Manual Page 44 for details.

G) The jockey pulley wheel is much more tooth-y relative to the 6870.

Will play more in e-tube....when it isn't 0F out in the garage. BRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Yesterday I brought home a 2017 trek Boon 7 with Force 1X to be my winter road bike. Trying to decide between 35mm Schwalbe G-One Speed tires or 34mm Bontrager CX0's for the sand, salt and crud covered Mass suburb roads.

It has not arrived yet which is weird because it was ordered on the 10th and Backcountry always gives me free two day shipping.

UPS says scheduled on 1/16 so I'll let you know.

Liked the idea of quick chain ring swaps, and the ease of upgrading to Easton's new power meter if I decided to. And it looks cool.

Not sure where I'm at on the power meter yet, I really like it on my road bike. Works great for indoor training, I'm not great at utilizing it in my outdoor training but does give nice feedback on efforts. I just don't know how much I would benefit on gravel rides; most of the time its just having fun riding.
