The Car Talk guy
I guess almost everyone know that Tom Magliozzi of Click and Clack fame passed away the other day. I used to enjoy listening to Car Talk even after I started the using a bicycle to get around town.
My surprise when reading a Bicycling Magazine article that Tom was a carfree person. Seems unlikely, but here's a New Yorker article where he states he doesn't own a car and uses a bicycle. The 2002 article is about his opinion of the SUV phenomenon.

I listened to them a few times back in the day, despite my animosity toward cars, and found them to be hilarious. Only recently did I learn that they favored progressive steps like higher fuel efficiency standards and investment in public transport.
I can't stand their boorish British counterpart, Jeremy Clarkson.

It was a great show and two very interesting hosts. I enjoyed hundreds of their programs over the many years they were on NPR. Although they loved cars, Tom and Ray were never proponents of the perverted auto-centric society we live in.

On NPR, they said when he did drive, it was at 35 miles per hour! You cannot enjoy driving at that speed because today's motorist will want to run you off the road!
Even though both were good radio hosts, I found the show boring because it was all about people with all sorts of costly motor problems. I really couldn't undstand most of what was being said I'm that motor illiterate. Regardless, I'm surprised he was carfree.

I've found a huge number of Car Talk episodes on TuneIn Android app. I just listened to the tribute show for Tom. Really sad, despite what his brother Ray tried to do to liven the mood.
I hope NPR leaves them available for us.

I stopped listening to Car Talk years ago. Their constant obnoxious guffawing at their own jokes grated on my nerves and the noise level of the bellowing outweighed the otherwise enjoyable repartee.

I love Car Talk and hope that NPR continue to air the repeats. Many people don't realize that they actually stopped recording new shows over two years ago when Tom first developed Alzheimer symptoms. All of the airings over the last 2 years have been pieced together from previous shows.
It's rare in my opinion to find such genuine warmth, intelligence and humor on TV/Radio. I enjoyed their brotherly banter and I also appreciated not having to endure crude innuendo disguised as humor.
I'll miss Tommy.

I've never heard Car Talk, but I did meet one of them at a SEMA show. SEMA is the dark heart of car-loving.

I love Car Talk and miss having new episodes, I often wished that there was a similar show for cyclists (Bike Talk any one?). I think I remember hearing that he did not drive, but I thought it was because he just could not give up his old MG! Maybe he could have done a spin-off for bicycles?!

There are a number of good videos on YouTube on bicycle commuting and transportation. However, there is nothing close to CarTalk for cyclists. I would listen for ten minutes simply for them and not really care what the issues were.
