700x23C tire on 23mm rim

I am having some serious issues with one of my old bike frames. My front fork has clearance for tires up to about 27/28mm (28C tire may fit if it does not stretch out to 30mm). H PLUS SON recommend that their TB14 rim, which is 23mm wide with a bead width of 17.5mm, be fitted with 23C tires. I emailed them concerning running 28C on those rims and they came back stating that the 28C was too wide for that rim. For the last 33-years I have been running 25C thru 35C tires on my Nashbar rims which are 622x17C rims with a 17mm bead width so I do not understand where they are coming from but whatever - that is what they came back with. So, that got me thinking if it is okay to run 23C tires on rims that have an outside width of 23mm, what about running 25C tires on 622x19C rims? This size rim has an outside width of 25mm. If one is okay is the other also okay?

All of those combinations would work fine. I'm not sure why H+S would say what they did, but plenty of people run 28mm tires on rims of that width.

Since wide rims allow tires to puff out a little, I think I'd try a nominal 25mm tire with the TB14s on your old bike and see how that works out.

No issue running 28s on my Velocity A23s which are 23mm wide. Have been running 25s and 28s on my Campagnolo 19mm and 20mm rims for years, also no issues. H+ Sons is relatively new to the industry, a few years back they made patio furniture, probably still do under another name.

They probably told you that meaning that a wider tire wouldn't be optimized for the "aero" benefits of the rim pairing. OR if you told them about your fork clearances, they might be concerned about a nominally 28mm tire plumping up to 30mm and not clearing your fork. But otherwise, there is no problem with that pairing.

First Ive heard of this. I thought the company was started over a decade ago by the son of a family that owns/owned a bicycle manufacturing facility in China, but admittedly not much info is easily found on the brand's history. What label was the patio furniture made under?

I gave up on the H+Son deal and just went ahead and ordered another set of Ryde Sputnik rims. My old Bike Nashbar 17Cx622 rims gave out - the bead was so worn after some 33 or so years that a relatively new Scwalbe 700x32C tire just blew off the rim. Yesterday I finished building up the Sputnik rims on my Campy NR hubs (high flange hubs from 1973 that I have been riding since 1975 or there abouts) with no problems at all until . . . ! I ordered new tires for the new rims and it took three tire irons to get these new tires on the Sputnik rims. The tires are 700x32C. Today, I took my bike out for a test ride and that test ride extended into a little longer ride because the "new" wheels were so sweet on the road - and I am talking about hand laid brick roads with a few cobble stone sections thrown in for good measure. Anyway, I am glad that I went the way I did because the new rims and tires were really nice on the road today.

I would say this chart is more modern than some older ones, but is still erring on the side of caution. I run a 25mm tire on a 23i, 30e rim and have run a 2.1in tire on a 15mm rim. No issues.
