Maybe a step in the right direction, but what was the editor thinking posting a picture of a couple of cyclist NOT WEARING HELMETS???

I thought the problem was they were in Alabama?

HIYOOOOOOOO

just kidding. Are helmets mandatory in Alabama? If not, I don't see the problem.

I'm sure hundreds of defects could be found and debated. I'd rather focus on two people out riding on what seems to be a beautiful day.

Helmet law in Alabama? I think so... I'd be fine with that decission to be left up to the individual. Me? I prefer to cover my head.

Worse, the guy is wearing baggy shorts, and the young woman is wearing running shoes!

If you really believe in individual freedom, start acting like it. If you really want to tell other people what to do, start admitting it.

I believe Alabama's mandatory helmet law applies only to kids 16 and under.

Wow, way too much importance is placed on helmets.

According to this site, helmet laws in AL only apply to those under 16 in most municipalities.

Who gives a crap if they are or are not wearing helmets? Focus more on what Alabama is doing to improve cycling and not what some photo journalists chose to place in an article.

He was probably thinking most of the people in Alabama who ride bicycles do not wear helmets and so represented a fair image of cycling in that fair state.

And you also think that newspapers shouldn't print pictures of people who dress differently than you do.

He was thinking how nice it is to feel the breeze in your hair and that cycling, like driving, doesn't need special clothing or helmets or shoes to be effective... just like all those wonderful folks in places like Copenhagen.

Isn't it really funny that where there are a lot of people riding bikes, there are few helmets, but where there are few cyclists, helmets are almost mandatory.

So bottom line, what's wrong with the picture... nothing.

incorrect. the picture is wrong because neither cyclist has their soon-to-be-mandatory rear light.

It's daylight... they don't need a soon to be mandatory light.

They are riding in the wrong order. The view is better when the woman rides in front.

Helmet laws are in effect in a distinct minority of states, and in most places where they do apply, they apply only to youth under the age of 18, or sometimes younger. While it's a good idea to wear a helmet everytime you ride, it's by no means illegal in most places to ride with your hair and ears flapping in the breeze.

Consider motorcyclists, who run up and down the roads and freeways all the time at 70+ mph with their locks flowing freely...

Seems like the people in the picture are doing just that. They're out riding and appear to enjoy it. If more kids and adults spent some of their spare time doing that we'd have a healthier nation.

Perhaps the editor felt it was important to remind some people that those who are NOT acolytes of the Church of the Styrofoam Hat are still CYCLISTS.

Not a damn thing as far as I am concerned. They are riding bikes.
