So yeah that happened. Rear derailer hanger broke, not sure how. So, have to figure out what the next step is.

Most non-steel frames have replaceable hangers. Can't tell on yours.

Dayum! That's ugly!
I've been on replaceable hangers for around 6 years now and never had a problem.
Bent up a few steel ones...

My theory is your RD rear housing somehow got caught by a cog.

Did you mean spoke ? That's the most common cause. Doesn't take much mis-adjustment to happen.

Looks to me like he shifted over the top of the cassette, dropping the chain between the largest cog and the spokes, at enough speed to whip the RD around and lock up the rear wheel. E: see how far out his low limit is?
OP: the good news is that the replaceable hanger sacrificed itself like it was supposed to- saving your frame. Amazingly your wheel looks fine. A new hanger, an RD and a cable and rear housing and you should be good to go. might want to have a shop take a look anyway and see that your frame is still in alignment. You can check as well, is the wheel still centered between the stays (both pairs?)?

That would be last week for me. Broke a spoke, then the hanger broke as the drive train got sucked up into the wheel and the wheel locked.

I was not shifting at the time. Just riding up a slight incline in the saddle. The bottom picture is the rear housing after being chewed up a bit. They are jagwire housings. It protected the cable as it was undamaged somehow.
How often should the hangers be replaced?

How often? Never......unless something is messed up with tuning of the drivetrain.

Go to the 50+ forum and look for this thread. Read to the bottom about soft derailleur hangers.
