Adding links - different chains?
So I'm building up a bike from my parts bin and I'm having issues getting it to shift to big in the front/big in the back. Since this is only an issue with this gear combination I assume my chain is too short. I have two 9 speed chains with plenty of life left in them, but both are just too short. Would it be terrible to add a link from one of those chains to the other or should I just suck it up and buy a new chain? I am not sure if they are the same brand but they are both 9 speed.

If they are Shimano chains, you should see markings on the plates. Plus if they are Shimano chains, you will need two, and maybe up to four, replacement pins.
Personally I'd just buy a new chain.

I wouldn't do it. It is probably cheaper to buy a new chain than to buy the proper joining pins. And BTW, you shouldn't use that gear combo anyway.

The last thing you want to have happen is to twist your derailleur into the spokes because your chain was too short. You'll have to buy a new chain along with a bunch of other stuff.
