snagged this one today, '87 I think.... anyone?. Not many of these with pictures on the web. Is this because it was likely soon after production went to Taiwan? Thought I might be getting a diamond in the rough, mostly just rough. Significant ding in the top tube, stuck seat post. Everything else came off easily. Plenty of sun. The bars and stem actually used to be anodized black, which I found out after removing brake levers and shifters. Didn't know UV would undo anodization, anodizing, whatever the noun is. My first stumpy. I guess I got a little excited about it before really looking it over. Should still be able to do something fun with it. XT RD, right shifter, Suntour XC 9000 brake levers and FD, Deore cantis, U-brake, XT uniglide 6 speed rear hub. The XT stuff must be aftermarket. Specs say Suntour XC 9000 with specialized hubs. Deore cranks/biopace rings. Better luck next time.

That MB-3 is a beauty but it's actually a '92. The '93 model came in silver or purple (like my own '93 bike). 1992 model came in red or blue. Other than color, I believe the models are nearly identical.

1993 Merida Al Bon with front triange in glued 6061 t6 aluminium and rear triangle made of extremely carefully tig welded double butted 4130 cr mo, present from a friend who used this bike as a race trail bike and a daily commuter, original deore lx with sti shifters. Original araya rims and kenda tires were changed by me for mavic xm 819 tubless rims and hutchinson tubless tires for better and faster riding. Despite its age, the bike is 11 kilos. Possible next upgrade to go full xt 10 speed and v brakes



I also have a scapin frame (not photographied) from the mid 90's that will be equipped when money allows with ritchey and shimano xt components

1993 Trek 8300 with Suntour XC Comp














Unfortunately the original shifters were replaced with grip shifters and the accushift indexing leaves a lot to be desired. I'll probably swap out the suntour hub for something that I can install a hyperglide cassette on. Or i might do a single speed conversion with the wheel.

As far as the ride, I haven't taken it for a long ride but it's noticeably stiffer than any of my steel rides. It's also lighter than any of my steel mtbs at 25.95 lbs (i laughed when the scale was that close to 26 w/o going over). The catalog advertised it at 24 with the stock folding tires. It feels pretty speedy and agile.. I'm thinking of turning it into a road machine with drop bars. I'll need to work out the fit though.. it's a bit small for me and the bars are in a weird place.

Sweet Bike man, kinda suprised it weighs that much I would have thought 23-24 lbs. If you get rid of the suntour RD, or freewheel let me know I may be interested...Im a big suntour fan for some reason...hah. I picked up a 1994 Univega Alpina 5.5 and all stock it weighed 24.5lbs. Its cromoly 969 Race-Lite with LX components. But yea man let me know if you want to get rid of ANY of the suntour stuff I will take it off your hands.

great trek you can shave of some lbs by either having some custom made wheels with radial spokes setting in the front wheel and the radial setting spoke on the opposite of the cassette sprokets (like on the mavic crossmax, mavic xc 717 or xm 719 are fantastic rims if not try to get new old stock xm 819 mavic tubeless rims), alongwith upgrading the trans to later standards alongwith v brakes installation. It will make of your oldie a sub 24 lbs bike. You can even be more nitpicking if you add carbon cranks, carbon seat post, carbon bar stem and sadlle, but this will be expensive.

yeah Andy when i saw your post in the other thread about the weight of your alpina it made me a lil mad LOL.. the tires that are on there aren't anything special and might be a quick way to drop some weight. Is your Alpina steel or aluminum

I'll let you know about the wheelset, though I'm also interested in keeping the suntour stuff together. But imo bikes just don't shift well without hyperglide cassettes. I'll try it out with some friction shifters first though

georges thanks for the suggestions.. I noticed the spokes aren't butted so a wheel rebuild may be in order. that's one thing i haven't done before, but i've got a truing stand and some patience

Love all these bikes...they all have their own character to them. The GT is my GF's ride now and its smooth and handles the trails well...little heavy but is great at climbing. The Panasonic is also a great climber and is VERY stable and easy to ride. The Univega is the fastest of all the bikes...has the most "racy" geometry of the 3 and its BY FAR the lightest of the bunch. Its kind of insane how light the Univega is.

Its Steel 969 Race-lite. The tubes are .9 at the ends and .6 in the middle. I think the wall thickness is the same as Columbus SL so it is pretty light. You know if we just went with some newer wheels we could drop a TON of weight. My 2011 Diamondback MTB has FSA wheels that are 1700g for the both of them....thats 1000g less than whatever yours or mine weighs.

Nice trek. I had a 94 Trek 9800 for a while and it came in around 24 lbs even with that heavy fork. I'm surprised your's is so heavy. I couldn't stand the ride though - felt dead on the trails.

Felt dead as in the frame was too stiff? Or bad geometry? I have never ridden a carbon bike I would imagine it would feel more flexy than aluminum or steel but I guess Im wrong.

I rode a while back my cousin's olcv bike like this one 10 years ago as well as his giant mcm team, despite being light and fast mtb cross country carbon race frames, they were too stiff and really uncomfortable over the long run for me. My favorite frame on a MTB I have ridden was the Kona Explosif which was made in Reynolds 853 steel, very nervy and comfy frame. The bike was as light as an alumnium MTB and it was a fast riding bike.

So the carbon frame bikes are just too stiff....that sucks. I guess I never really thought about it but I do really love the way steel feels on the trails. I kind of want to add a air/coil fork to my Univega to give it a little more trail ability but at the same time I dont want to add weight when the bike is sub 25lbs.

You can have a nice set of lightweight wheels built if you order the mavic xm 819 ust tubeless rims. Good luck for finding a 1" air coil fork for older bikes, they are almost non existent unless you find a new old stock one. Check if ritchey has a straight 1" carbon fork for your univega, it may be worth to see if that exists, so you will be probably making the whole bike lighter .

I am presently in the process of building up an Explosif... the frame is incredibly light and it will be getting a Project 2 rigid fork and some XT / XTR bits... should be a screamer.

For sure, it will be one. For the wheels, may I advise you to check older/second hand set of crossmax ust tubeless wheels, it will make the bike faster and lighter. I will be later (when money allows) in the process of building a scapin made of deddaciai dr zero (the deddacciai equivalent of the 853) which is very light too, I might put on it a ritchey carbon fork alongwith ritchey and xt components, but that is not for now.

My trek is a composite frame made with aluminum and carbon, and the carbon is just round tubes, shaped just like your typical steel tubes. Full carbon frames can be designed in custom shapes to have stiffness in some directions and flex in others. the Aluminum stays probably contribute a fair amount to how much of the road feel is transferred to one's butt

I haven't ridden this bike a ton so it's hard to give it a complete review, but it definitely feels different from steel and doesn't seem to soak up the bumps quite the same way. I will have to wait and see how it rides once i get the fit dialed in and set up the cockpit. Strangely, even though the distance from the saddle to the bars is longer than on some of my other bikes, it feels too small still.

I'd really like to get this thing down around 24 lbs or less.. I was surprised when it came in at 26lbs. No sense giving up the ride of steel if it's not significantly lighter imo...
