Just thought I would let you know....I recently aquired a 1993 8700 Composite. Got it for 80 bucks....lol. Its set up as a single speed right now probably will keep it that way. Its the womans new ride....I will post pics soonish. I like the way it rides.

anybody know a good modern 2 piece crank (hollow bb axle) that is 110bcd and would look good on an early 90s mtb?

Should be fine, if it fits the BB shell width properly 73mm vs 68mm. If you have a 68mm shell, then would be just fine I suppose. 110bcd is probably a road crank, so would be something to verify first. 33/34 tooth rings are somewhat limiting for offroad climbing. As for looks, probably would be just fine.

yeah i think it should work.. I'm more looking for suggestions if anyone has tried it out. 34t for the small ring is fine.. I live in the flats and don't do much offroading anyways

Nice bike andyfloyd! Is your ATX 970 made from Alcoa CU92 aluminum? I used to race on a polished '98 ATX 890 Tomac Signature hardtail, that was an awesome bike! It was every bit the singletrack killer that my '92 Easton Yeti A.R.C. hardtail was with similar stiff and snappy ride quality. A buddy begged and begged so I sold it to him in 2000, he still hits the trails weekly with that bike. Giant had some great bikes in the mid-90s to early 2000s, I'm sure you're going to love the bike!

I wasn't aware that 1997 was considered vintage. Well seeing as it is, I'll put my 1997 Giant ATX970 up here too. I bought it new in 1999 and upgraded a lot of parts. It's got a crappy seat and tires in the pic as I was trying to sell it. I put it on CL for $200 and didn't get a single email, so I kept it. It's got some Velociraptors and a black saddle now. The bike is awesome downhill, really well mannered at speed. Even with only 3" of rear travel, it's hard to bottom out, it seems to have more travel. @andyfloyd, I think you're going to like the ride of yours. Good score.

It is not the CU92 its Giant's 6061 Aluminum. I think the previous model year had the CU92, Im not sure how much of a difference there is between them but the frame is fairly lightweight this bike should be in the 25-26lb neighborhood once its all done. Its sitting around 22lb right now as you see it. I really like the way this bike is looking as Im building it. I initially was going to sell it but Im starting to really like it and I havent even ridden it yet!

Nice bike you got there, haha. Im looking forward to riding mine. I just got a Ano Red 30.8mm post and a new derailleur hanger. Bike should be on the trails in a couple weeks. Gonna also have a SID hanging off the front of it so I have high expectations for it.

Thanks. It shouldn't let you down. They are a bit "bobby" while pedaling, but I found if you set up the rear coil preload so there's a bit of sag ~1", that it bobs a bit less. Evidently, it has a rising rate suspension that becomes harder to compress as it goes into it's travel.

I am a lightweight guy #150 or so. I already set the preload to be very soft because i had to do so in order to get the sag correct. I have toyed with the idea of putting on an air shock like a Fox RP2 on it, but I want to ride it first to see how its going to feel. How do you like the RST-22 on the rear? I had something similar on my Specialized FSR and when I put on a Fox air shock it was so much better.

I'm not super psyched about it, no adjustment, but it does it's job. I always planned on replacing it when it broke, but the darn thing still works!

Hey if it aint broke dont fix it right? I usually just upgrade stuff because I like to...haha. I see weight savings in everything...that RST is heavy and just the coil alone weighs about the same as a whole Fox RP2. And the fox would probably offer a wider range of adjustment and might increase the rear travel. I know the ATX 990 had a RockShox coupe deluxe that had 4" on the same rear end as the 970 so my bike and yours should be able to increase travel with no issues.

Here's a Sekai Bigfoot that I bought for $40! Based on the components and the research I've done I am guessing it's a 1983-1984. Had original cables rusted inside the housing. It has Suntour Alpine Gear Tech front & rear derailleur, Sumo 26 x 1.75 rims, SR Laprade seat post, Tourney GS cranks, Victor 747 "bear trap" pedals, Suntour ratchet thumb shifters, DiaCompe brake levers and cantilever brakes, Shimano rear high flange hub & sunshine high flange front hub. Has a great bi-plane fork. This is the first bike I have ever taken completely apart. I did it piece by piece, degreased, polished, reinstalled and had great fun. I cleaned/repacked headset, wheel hubs, pedals, freewheel and bottom bracket - Phil Wood grease and new ball bearings. I even took the shifters apart, cleaned & reassembled. Of course it got new brake pads, cables/housings and different tires. I added an old Brooks Honey B67, Sunlite black foam grips, and ended up switching out the DMR Supermoto tires for Panaracer Paselas in 26 x 1.75. I have since added Planet Bike clip on fenders and a black rear rack. I removed all the rust with Naval Jelly and 0000 steel wool and clear coated spots that were bare metal. Don't ask why, but I love this bike.

@cyclotoine - the first two pictures are right when I brought it home. I went to bed that night with huge buyer's remorse because as of last July I had never done more than change a flat tire on a bike. I thought for sure I was in way over my head, so I just looked to the internet, youtube, Park's Big Blue Book, local bike shop for advice, etc. I took a million photos along the way to make sure I got it all put back together correctly. The wheelbase is 42 1/4" long and the chain stay is 18 1/2" long, so it seems like that's long for a mountain bike. As far as being "surefooted" I can say I've only ridden it in urban settings on the street and paths. It weighs about 33 lbs. without the rack & fenders. The fork is actually what attracted me to the bike. I wish that it was lugged too, but....oh well. I've named it "Mineral" (no I don't have a habit of naming inanimate objects ) because it's solid and sort of grayish greenish in color.

@OTS, Thanks for the feedback and the encouragement! I have learned that I'm a "tinkerer". Some really nice bikes on this thread so far. Someone in my local Portland CL is selling a 1985 "all original" Diamond Back Ascent for $80 and I'm thinking to give them a call. I already have 5 bikes.....I know N+1....
