Day of the Hour to become a twice yearly event at Milton

My buddy Michael Kolesar has worked hard to ensure last years event was not a one off, and now that Cycling Canada is on board, it looks like his dream has become a reality.
Day of the Hour ? A Best Hour Performance Event
Day of the Hour - Domestic - Events - Track - Cycling Canada Cyclisme
There will be one event scheduled in 2018, but for 2019 and beyond, the plan is to schedule two events.
Last year saw four UCI recognized world hour records set.
Looking forward to Aug 25th, 2018.

This is cool. Will it be open to international riders as well?

Yup. Michael is really dedicated to this. I know better than most how hard he has worked on it.

I only ask because I see this as a very cost effective way for record attempts. The venue and officials are already I place, so the cost of doing the business of the hour is spread out, and maybe even supplemented by gate sales. This brings the record attempt within reach of those that may break It, but can't afford to ratify it.

It is a good way to spread some of the costs around, like the expense of bringing in the UCI officials, time keepers, drug testers and so on.
It's still a fairly costly enterprise to rent the facility, feed the volunteers, decal the boards, etc. etc.
Having a big name sponsor such as Mercedes Benz helps a lot, but each competitor still has to shell out quite a bit.

Dan, are you worried that a non-local will have the Hour track record?

I agree with, Taras. I've even seen The Hour performed during the week of Masters Nationals at Colorado Springs when the officials were there for the other events. The rider got to do his attempt early in the morning before the normal nationals events.

I believe that the rider had to cover the cost of the officials working his special event. Something like $40/official (don't quote me on that). But, it wasn't a crazy amount. He probably had to pay for drug testing, too, if he broke the record. That's the expensive part.

^ paying around $2500 (may go down ~$1k with enough people, need a pretty big group) to make an attempt in July at Aguas. Doping control eats up about $500 of that.

Not a cheap pursuit!

Wow. I did mine for free here - officials donated their time. I had the track record for a few months...

*that does include renting time at the track beforehand and paying for both the officials time (Mexico doesn't have a UCI comm so somebody has to come in from the US) / equipment and doping control. (Doping control is ~$500)

Still, free sounds a lot better haha

You only need UCI officials and drug testing if you want the UCI to officially recognize the effort.

Local track officials can award a local track record without a UCI official or drug testing.
