Broke my rear brake I think
New to cycling. Picked up a used Fuji Absolute 1.7. It needed rear brake pads so I picked some up and gave it a shot. While attempting to adjust the spring tension, the tip of the spring gave way from the cap, and I think a bit of the spring tip broke off. I had it all back up and working at one point, though, but the brakes were very touchy and instant. So long story short, i messed with the barrel adjuster and the cable tension screw and the spring tip is likely broken, so I am thinking I likely need a new rear brake.
Question is, what are my options if I buy a new one? I guess it can't be a V brake like the bike has on the front.
Can't post pic but it's Promax and looks like the Promax ERK, in that it's center pull. I think it's a cantilever center pull U brake, of sorts...
I'm new to the forum and I appreciate any help! And I can't wait to cruise through all the great info here...

I see the Promax ERK on line for as low as $29. https://pedaller.bike/promax-erk-bmx...e-black-780980 If you are uncertain what else may fit I would just replace it with the same thing and keep the old one for spare parts.
I guess you could also check with the manufacturer or LBS to see if you can buy a replacement spring.

Yes, that's a "U brake". Other brake types really aren't compatible, due to the location of the brake bosses (above the rim, rather than below as for traditional cantilever or linear pull brakes). By your description, it does sound like you've lost some spring tension, perhaps due to the spring breaking. It's possible that a bike shop that specializes in older mountain bikes or BMX bikes might have a spring, but a complete replacement brake is probably worth the money (30 bucks).

It's also chainstay mounted, forgot to mention that. I guess that's why it's not a v brake like the front is. Thanx for the replies, And I guess the spring isn't actually broken. It was just that cap over the spring would break free. But I was able to get it all going. Just had to watch the right video on YT I guess.

Those U-brakes have one arm that needs the wheel removed to wind the spring tension. Its easier to understand than to write. Basically one arm is reversed in spring direction and needs to be turned the other way. I had U brakes on my 91 Haro Extreme, and have fond memories of them.
