It takes mental power to maintain a set pace. Unfortunately, we can't all be blessed with strong mental powers. Sorry, OP.

I don't know what the fuss is all about since I can go slow without even trying.
It's easy and I hardly break a sweat doing it. Must be a natural talent I guess?

I ride as fast as I can for the distance planned for the day. On a 60-miler, I won't hammer like I do on a 30-miler. That's on my road bike. On my C&V or MTB commuter, I don't pay attention to speed.
I know what you mean, though: I wouldn't know how to ride any slower than maximum at all times on road rides. It just wouldn't make any lense to me: I'd feel like I was "milking" it.
I do a 60-miler on sunday and a 30 on wednesday, so I am in no danger of burning out. The other days, I use my other bikes, in a more leisurely style.

I used to have the same issue.... always riding fast.
I would take off from a dead stop burning rubber and fighting to keep the front wheel on the ground.
I once received a speeding ticket from an angry CHP.... angry because he couldn't catch me for a bit.
The whole "I'm too fast for my shoes" thing ended when I finally switched to riding a unicycle.
Now I can ride slowly and enjoy all the sights on the way.
When there is a will, there is a way...

This is my cure for riding fast... load my panniers with 40 lbs of crap and hang them on the bike. Throw the dog into the trailer with all her crap, and attach it to the bike as well. Then, pedal it all to a campsite or park 30-40 km away over numerous hills.
No more speed problem
