Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

White stem and bars with white tape?

Got a caad 10 that is predominantly white with blue and red. I have an unused white stem and was curious if I should get white or black bars. Will be using white bar tape. Overkill?

Most roadies are pretty particular about this. Match stem color to tape color only if you wear your cycling shorts under your street pants.

White bars and white tape? No! White tape, white stem, black bars. Only if your socks match the bar tape.

95%+ of the bikes shown on BF have black stems and black tape.

I'd say it could be OK as long as the seatpost, saddle and all of the spacers are also white. Match finishing tape to the stem face plate and think about white cable outers as well.

thanks for the pic bbattle. that def helps me see what the look may be. my saddle is white with red but my spacers are black. so it will be a little different but should pretty good. now just trying to figure out my bar dilemma. i have always used round tops but thinking about the fsa k-wing. if not i can get alloy pro vibe but i think the carbon will help absorb some of the ride.

also nice touch with the red spacer.

Seriously. It depends how much of the red and blue you have, and where, and the size and coloration of your rims....

Pfft. The Velominati have integrity and a modicum of taste, but zero imagination. A bunch of uptight, insufferable boors, if you ask me. Or a bunch of clowns, I'm not sure which.

I am not sure how I feel about the white tape here... if you are going to the trouble of putting a lot of white stuff on the bike, I would definitely go with white hoods too.

I prefer to consider it well-done satire.

The one thing you can count on with white bar tape is that the tape will shortly show significant dirt.

I'd rather spend what time I have riding instead of cleaning white bar tape.

YMMV.

The exception to this rule is Fizik Microtex. Have well over 2000 miles on mine and still clean. White PRO Silicon bar tape gets filthy almost immediately in my experience.

White Lizardskins 3.0 isn't bad either, though it does require some cleaning to keep nice. Not "cuts-into-my-ride-time" kinda cleaning, just normal, "I-care-about-how-my-sh*t-looks" kinda cleaning.

I tend to stay away from black as much as possible, due to attraction of light hence heating up the bars in the sun. No problem during cold months but sweaty hands is something I like to stay away from in the warm seasons. Blue or red sounds neat. White wouldn't be bad either. Congrats on the CAAD10 purchase. Sweet bike.

That's the stock setup from Trek. I plan on replacing the white tape with red.

The smudge on the front tire is sweat on the camera lens.
