Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What color socks?

I've ridden in black Sidi shoes with ankle high off white socks for the last 2 decades. This is a very classic style and I pull it off very well.

But Sidi quit making shoes in my size and my new pair of Rocket7 shoes are going to the WHITE!!!

Can I continue to wear ankle high white socks, or should I change to black knee high socks which seem to be the rage?

Besides the additional cost of obtaining a new sock wardrobe, I would be covering up a pretty nice gecko tattoo on the back of my right calf. I'm willing to consider a change because I don't want to be seen as a stick in the mud when it comes to cycling fashion.

I am asking about this in the road forum rather than the general cycling forum because I am looking for serious responses, not snide remarks from fixie hipsters.

Thank you for you advice.

3-4" high sox are all I wear. Knee-high sox are for schoolgirls and tryathletes.

I will need to know your bike and kit colors before I can seriously answer this question.

Knee high? Are you a cheerleader? Shortest white socks you can find. Anything else makes you a poseur.

Go with whatever fashion is hot right now. If the socks cover up the gecko tattoo, cut a hole in the sock so it can be seen.

How you look is far more important than how you ride. I know you get that, otherwise you wouldn't have posted up your question.

My short pink "Cancer Sucks" sox make me a poseur?

Meh, I've been called worse by better men than you.

The standard (UCI, etc.) is a sock topping out no higher than midway between the ankle and knee.

Wrong on both counts! What could be worse than being a poseur? The falsity of the second part of your statement is self evident. Although I would consider making an exception for pink "Cancer Sucks" socks. It never occurred to me at the time of my pronouncement that such a thing even existed. You don't have a spare pair you would consider parting with, enh?

Unless you're looking for compression socks or additional warmth, I'd stay away from the knee-high's. Unless you're riding with the fashion police, wear whatever color works for you. Who cares what others think?

It's a pair of socks. No one is really looking at your sock choice. I wasn't aware that we had actual "fashion" other than looking pretty silly to everyone else for our own functional needs. Me...I wear whatever pair I grab first.

Please no. Black is fine. Nobody but you will really notice the color anyway. But the latest fad is pretty stupid. One of these days the industry will be pushing thigh high socks on us, and making race teams wear them so everyone will think they're cool.

I thought the taller socks were supposed to help with blood circulation. I remember back in the 80s hearing about pro riders actually wearing old lady support pantyhose for this reason. Guess that trend never caught on.

I typically wear calf length socks. Mostly because I also wear a brace/wrap on my left ankle and ankle high socks cause the brace to chafe my leg. Also saves me money on suntan lotion, which I apply liberally due to skin cancer scare earlier this year.

As the weather has been trending colder in the midwest I have broken out my knee high soccer socks a few times for my early morning rides. I know it looks silly, but I just don't care.
