A Little Help for A Newbie Mechanic
Recently I shifted hard into gear and snapped my chain. With the help of a mechanic friend we replaced the chain and adjusted the derailleur so that the chain moved smoothly through the gears. Although the bike is shifting fast, the chain is still dropping "hard" into each gear making a noticible "clunking" sound. I am afraid that I might snap the chain again. Does anyone have any ideas how I might mend this?

If it is dropping hard, try increasing the cable tension by turning the adjuster barrel on the rear derailleur out 1/4 turn at a time (like you are unloosening the barrel)... this increases cable tension and will slow down your shifts going from Low (big gear) to High (little gear). You will know if you have too much tension if it no longer drops down cleanly or hangs up when you shift.

Don't shift when you're pedaling really hard.
