Geeze!.... All C&Vers should know what those were for......You rotate those on your waist a quarter turn to hide the "junk" when a #1 bathroom call comes up during rides.... Useful to catch the dribbles too.....
So stay away from it if you find one in your grand pappy's trunk of cycling goodies.... It's pretty easy to spot with its usual yellowish batik-like pattern on it....

I notice a significantly different saddle to bar drop too, especially the guy on the left!

A handy device. I took my son to the World Champ RR in Richmond last weekend and we walk up to the barrier on Franklin St right as the peloton goes by. One of the French riders was taking un break naturelle as he rode right by us. I declined to take a picture of the, shall we say, gruppo, but here's the trail he left behind.

Second from the right guy is the fred...bent bars, sloppy socks, uneven shorts, wide saddle, blank look.
My money is on the short guy to his left. Thunder thighs and no socks to reduce weight.
Nice pic.

I've read somewhere (or heard or saw) that one of the biggest entertaining events in the early 1900's-1920's was the circus coming to town, and that bicycle races thru the small towns was also a big event. They may have adopted the flashy look of circus performers... plus, it made your favorite rider recognizable in a peloton. Does anyone else recollect this?

I had the same thought about the slouch who is second from the right. He looks outclassed. However, you say your money is on the guy to his left without socks. It's the guy on his right who isn't wearing socks. My money is on the guy on the the far right, actually. Look at his arrogant stance! The guy on the far left has the most aggressive set-up but is a bit thick in the gut. Maybe was the best of the bunch in his day but has the look of being a bit past his prime. In any case, I bet it was a two-man race between your man in no socks and my man on the far right.
