Well towards the second half of a very long and or intense ride, sugar is like crack. But in general, a sugary breakfast shouldn't be necessary. Still, I do enjoy a little sugar in some of my breakfast cereals and I don't think a small amount hurts me much. Other than during a long ride I really only eat sugar in some of my cereals or the small amount in pasta sause or thai noodles. And cocktails of course.

My comment was best fuel for training, not riding, not racing (what is best for that - depends). And for base miles/long/endurance - not sugar. I'm not certain even carbs for that.

As many acknowledge high intensity intervals are good for increasing speed and power. Sugar, caffeine (new thing pumping O2 into the room) are better high intensity fuels than fats, proteins or carbs in they help peak that interval intensity better. Sugar is the better fuel for heavy gym/lifting. If the goal is not to approach your limits, then nevermind. If it is, it is the best high energy food.

Then rest and go on a longer ride eating other than sugar.

Were you taking sugar for that? Caffeinated?

If not - I'd be curious if you tried again in a week on some caffeinated GU 15 min before.

thinking he's more like 140. I'd love to race with Matt sometime...our numbers are so comparable. I've a better 5 minute number and his numbers below 5, particularly his sprint, are better than mine.

i wish. closer to 160 these days. but i was happy with the result either way!

@Doge i had slurped a caffeinated gel earlier, but i intake a lot of caffeine each day so iím not sure it did anything. i donít feel anything until about 200mg or so.

the other thing is this is crank-based power; using PT hub iíd hit 360w so this isnít actually that much higher.

Gees I was 135 flat today, and put up 370 for 5 at the end of my workout. #trashtalk Too much sugar maybe, Matt? Intelligentsia? I don't know...I haven't actually considered traveling to anything beyond Mt Washington this year. Maybe I should consider that.

Apparently, I'd love to eat with Matt sometime, since we're both fatties . 160 atm, should be about 10 lbs lighter. On the right track now, life kicked our family in the nuts last month so there was a lot of 'comfort' food in the house.

Team camp. 55 miles yesterday, 75 today.

Did 373w for 21 minutes as a test today. Did 371 for 20 minutes last year, so 2 extra watts for 1 extra minute. Guess that falls within the error range, but I'll take a positive number over a negative.

Junior has gone to almost all rollers and weights - gym, for winter at least. He is generally pretty rested, outside of military duties.
The interesting thing to me is his power is apparently way up vs when he was riding a lot.
Seems this weight and roller combo is yielding really good results.

Another solid ride, in terms of pure wattage this has been my best week ever. Some of it is just riding under the conditions that allow it, the other is my hip issues getting much better (muscles are not snapping over the femur, no sciatica, etc). My lungs aren't there so I still think there are watts on the table to be gained. I still have a lot of work to do, still a trash cyclist, the difference is now I'm like Ally Sheedy in Breakfast Club where a little effort and make up I can look good.

I'm not sure that's the best analogy, or people even know who that is, but its the best I can come up with on short notice.

I don't want to say my hip is fixed, there's still alot of work to do. Last year I had a 2 day fluke where my hips felt great and my power spiked 40 watts and then I lost it.

I answered. I eat oatmeal (steel cut, generally these days).

In a wider framed answer...I'm personally baffled, troubled, by the general attitude people have about cooking. Eating is necessary and it's possible to make really good food simply. It's not a 33 or BF thing, by an overall societal issue dating back to the invention of the microwave, the increase in processed foods, and changes in marketing strategy. A large swath of the country stopped cooking as much and relied on the grocery store. As a result basic cooking know-how stopped being passed on to such a degree. Even today, the largest growing (and most profitable) section of markets is the prepared foods section. Convenience rules. The paradigm shift was that cooking was viewed formerly as a bonding issue, something fun to do, and with great tastes. At some point folks were sold the idea was it was undesirable. People would rather buy a roasted chicken, than roast a chicken. This has contributed to obesity and other health issues.

So yeah, circling back, there are healthier cold cereals. Grape nuts too. And if you want to eat them, go for it. But @topflightpro pretty much proved my point. Things are marketed as healthy, when often they're no better (sometimes even worse) than foods with a junk food stigma.

Generally speaking the healthiest thing folks can do is cook for themselves. Reason? When we do so we tend to use as few ingredients as possible. We lack additives and such.

I eat either cooked steel cut oats or cold soaked uncooked oats (muesli) every weekday. I donít have the time to eat before I ride, nor would my stomach tolerate it, I just take it to work and eat there. But I have a long commute and zero seconds to spare in the am.

I make a batch of either on the weekend and just scoop out what I need each morning. Itís plenty fast for me for 15 min max hands on time during the weekend.

I have evolved over the years to consuming as little bottled/jarred/boxed/prepared stuff as possible. I make and freeze all kinds of things, make great mayo out of walnut oil and organic eggs, canít walk past tomatillos on sale for $0.30 (green salsa! which freezes perfectly). Every now and then someone tries to give me a ďgreatĒ recipe they have, and then they start with ďone packet French onion soup mixĒ and I wish they would stop. No way.

I tried eggs and a potato this morning before heading out for my ride. Fried the potatoes in some olive oil with a bit of seasoning salt. Then used the left over oil to do the eggs ~over medium. Bit of ketchup (would do hot sauce, but my stomach has been screwed up recently). Was good. Also got a new burr coffee grinder and I'll say, the coffee it produces (using a moka pot, then add water to make a pseudo-americano out of it) is noticeably better than my old electric blade grinder. Doesn't make sense to me, but worth the money!

Time change + being out until 4AM at a concert last night has me a bit sleep deprived. But none the less, I got out on the tails for my first real mtb ride of the year. Still a bit slushy in places, but only had to get off and push a few times. Some muddy patches, but nothing felt deep enough that I thought I was causing trail damage. 2 hours on the bike. The new mtb setup is super nice. Extremely impressed with the scalpel and how well it climbs and rolls in general. It does a better job on some of the rougher terrain than my more burly Lapierre that I had this summer.

I've been doing eggs fried in olive oil with a little ketchup (Ok, a lot) for the last 6 months. It's really yummy and is a good protein fix for me. Often I'll do 2 or 3 and not need anything else for bfast.
