All 48 states with no repeats
The statics-about-news site FiveThirtyEight features a riddle or puzzle every Friday. Last Friday, the challenge was to find a path through the lower 48 states that visited all with no repeats. This is based only on crossing borders, not taking roads, and in that light at least it can be done. It can be visualized by treating each state as a vertex and each border as a line.
One respondent claimed to have made a path that crosses 91 borders without any repeat crossings, but he treated Four Corners incorrectly, I'd allege

...Still haven't seen anyone visiting all the places in "I've Been Everywhere" in order, not the US nor the Australian version. Maybe when I'm old...

What an out of the way route. Once you reached CHI you'd have to dip down in IL to IA and SD then go north up to Fargo before crossing the Red River into MN. I have actually done that last part.
Just for fun I looked at the lyrics to determine the place I have ridden to on a bike. In additional to Fargo and Minnesota I have visited:
Buffalo
Baltimore
Devil's Lake (ND)
Crater Lake (OR)
Springfield (MA)
Davenport
Idaho and
Colorado

I think this would take you through all 48 lower states (& DC).... One might have to check roads, rivers, canals, etc.
Washington
Oregon
California
Arizona
Nevada
Utah
Idaho
Montana
Wyoming
Colorado
New Mexico
Texas
Oklahoma
Kansas
Nebraska
South Dakota
North Dakota
Minnesota
Iowa
Missouri
Arkansas
Louisiana
Mississippi
Alabama
Florida
Georgia
South Carolina
North Carolina
Tenessee
Kentucky
Illinois
Wisconsin
Michigan
Indiana
Ohio
West Virginia
Virginia
Washington DC
Maryland
Deleware
Pennsylvania
New Jersey
New York
Connecticyut
Rhode Island
Massechusettes
Vermont
New Hampshire
Maine
But, that would be about 48 border crossings for 48 states + DC.
If one was doing 91 borders, then it would be repeating a bunch of states, but perhaps doing every possible border crossing.

I knew of the challenge of riding all New England states in a day when I raced. Had my life transpired differently (ie no accident) I might have tried it. After all, 175 miles wasn't hard for me then.
