Agreed.....my personal favorite color.

You get points for not having a kick stand. You'd be surprised at the damage they do.

Thanks, Kevin.

The bike actually came to me with a clamp-on kickstand, but there are only very light marks in the paint on the underside of the chainstays. It was very relieving. I've looked at bikes for sale a few times where the stays were almost completely crushed by the overtightened kickstand.

Even if they don't appear to have done damage, I always string the bike frame to see for sure.

Honestly, on this level Raleigh, it's best to put on what you really want to make the bike perform smoothly. Trying to stay period is just pi**ing in a windstorm.

In college I went to bike shop and they had a used Grand Prix in this color. I put on Suntour running gear and about everything that made sense to make the bike perform better and be lighter. I still miss that bike.....I was one with it.

As I chronicled in here before....I bought a SC this color from a druggie. I figured it to be '73'-'74. Drove all the way to Seattle to get it. Put together all the bits & pieces I wanted on the bike....even wound up with extra (bid on a Brooks saddle and won another....forgot to cancel the first bid and won it too...lol). Then along came a dead bone stock Competition GS in that kinda pearl white finish they did. It's an '80 and the guy I bought it from hung it in a carport in SoCal in '83.

That pretty much killed the SC project. I think on the International and above, it does matter what period running gear is on it because that was some fine Campy stuff back in the day. The Raleigh SBDU bikes in the 70's and early 80's were some of the finest ever made in steel. And they were winning big time in those days professionally.

Well, this is my first Super Course though it’s a little rough. Price was right and I’m a sucker for a Reynolds 531 frame of any kind. A big question is, can this Brooks saddle be saved or just wall art at this point.

brandenjs saved from what? I would ride that? I have a Brooks that is so cracked that it will rip any day. I am riding it until that day. It's very comfortable. Just keep yours away from water.

I guess the cracking just worried me a little bit. I’ve watched a couple restoration videos, but that seems like quite the process. I want to preserve it as best as I can. Oh the stories it could tell. I’ve got some rust work to do on the bike, but it’s going to turn out ok. Need some matching touch up paint.

There's really nothing you can do to make a rip happen later rather than sooner. Moisturizing with oil will make it happen sooner. I don't know what restoration means, but if it's filling in the cracks, that's benign but won't help. Other treatments will make it worse. Just ride it until that inevitable day. I buy used saddles for $60 or $70. Most of them last long enough.

Awesome thanks. I’ll ride her with the “character “ as my wife would say about some of my household projects

This is the exact same paint color and decal/transfer scheme as my beloved Super Course! However, the usual Raleigh variation in spec’d components has mine with the slightly nicer (IMHO) Stronglight 93 crankset, but with the less desirable Huret Challenger rear derailleur. The rest of your derailleur set seems to be identical - Challenger set. The Nervar set was nice quality but seemed more difficult to source replacement chain rings because of their unique 128 mm BCD.
Also mine came with Atom 440 pedals ( like MKS Sylvan Touring pedals). Your pedals look like those Raleigh Industries steel quills (IIRC “Phillips pattern”?). Very nice but a tad too narrow for my wide feet. The rims also look to be different; mine were engraved Weinmann Non dimpled Alesa type rims. I always thought that this was particularly nice paint scheme.

It is a great paint scheme. I need to try to match up some touch up. This has some pretty bad scratches under the top tube, but I don't want to go through the whole repaint process. It will be a flipper because it is a little too small for me. The Brooks might stay with me though.

Does any one make replacement silver tape for the seat tube bands on the early 70's Super Courses? Mine's pretty chewed up, and pieces stick out so it'd be nice to replace it.

Velocals has them and they look great. I had to replace the ones on my 68 and I’m very pleased with them.

As found.

Before decals

After decals.

Current completed build.

Very nice. I'd take that jubilee off and replace it with something else. People will pay money for that RD. Plus it's not the most durable RD in the world.

I'd go with period Suntour....a lot better stuff than the OE. Almost everyone I knew back then that had Grandprix and SC bikes replaced at least the RD with Suntour.

You could go with a better Campy group, but that's a waste of a good vintage set.....lots of Suntour stuff out there yet.

Why do these bikes feel so good? I have a bunch of different bikes, many clearly lighter than this Super Course MK II--- but for some reason I find myself pulling this one out for the morning commute all the time now.... it just feels great: smooth, comfortable, responsive enough....etc. Even with the stock 27" wheels and wire-bead Paselas, it feels pretty quick. Did Raleigh just get something really right about the geometry and materials, found some sweet spot.... so interesting.

Anyway, this is starting to look like the best $100 I've spent in a while. Bike came as pictured--- I've added new tires, cables, some Kool Stop salmon pads, and cheap white bar tape. My new favorite ride.

no67el, I haven't figured it out, either. Maybe the flaw is also the secret sauce. There is a bit too much wheel flop which makes the steering feel light. It makes tight turns at high speed tricky, but it also produces that smile when I get on it. And maybe the plain gauge stays add stiffness. It climbs really well for a bike of its weight.

Had my '73 out for a short 15 miles today, and it's just so smooth. I was discussing how many people agree that these ride way nicer than they ought to with my wife. I can't explain it. The workmanship is crummy. I had some guy, maybe 70 or so, holler, "Nice bike!" at me as I rode by him. Always nice to get a compliment.

Douglas Adams that the trick to flying is to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Maybe that's what happened here: crummy workmanship and ancient design worked together.

Thanks for the laugh Noglider.... Here I was thinking that it was an act of hidden genius, when it's more likely to have been a complete accident...!

The collective wisdom of bikeforums has not been able to get into the mind of the 1970s Raleigh company. I certainly haven't. I have a few of those bikes. One is a 1971 Raleigh Professional Track. It's a bit heavy for what it is -- 19 lbs for the complete bike --, but it's extremely sure-footed and very comfortable on the track. I suspect they really did know what they were doing and then got sloppy over time.

Built this up from a NOS frame, guy in our neighborhood had it in his basement, for a lot of years. 1978 according to the serial number, originally gold, with lots of paint damage from moving and storage, decals were dried out, and falling off. Ofmega CX hubs with Velocity A23 rims, sourced an original crank, Suntour Cyclone GT rd, Superbe fd, Suntour barcons, Gran Compe centerpulls, and Suntour Superbe levers. Finished the build last fall, got a couple of miles test ride in before the snow fell, waiting for spring.
